So far, there have been 5 different installments in the franchise, and while each one is interesting in its own right, the movies are not all of the same caliber. It’s a fact that the movies were pulling in fewer accolades at the box office with each release, but hopefully, the new movie will liberate the franchise. With that in mind, how do the films stack up against each other in terms of quality?

5 Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

In this movie, fans were introduced to Blackbeard, the merciless Captain of the pirate ship known as Queen Anne’s Revenge. Many were interested in knowing more about this new villain and his objectives, as well as getting to see Jack Sparrow in action. While this movie showed Sparrow in all his clumsy glory, it failed to capture the hearts of fans like its predecessors did. The fact that Barbossa lost his leg, and wasn’t even given enough screen time, was a bummer as well. The movie might have done a lot better if it leveraged the lore of Ponce de León’s ship for the main plot as there would have been a better story to tell than there was with the Fountain Of Youth. That said, it was still an interesting movie to watch as we got to see more of Captain Jack Sparrow being his usual goofy self.

4 Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

This movie is the 5th installment in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, and at this point, most fans were just eager to see Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow as he seemed to be the glue holding the movies together. His carefree attitude and cunning are all a pleasure to watch. This movie told the story of a sailor named Salazar, whom many referred to as El Matador Del Mar. He hunted down Pirates and ruthlessly disposed of them, but he ran out of luck when he attacked a fleet of pirate ships that had a young Jack Sparrow on board one of them. After the Captain of the Wicked Wench was killed, Jack assumed the position of its Captain and lured Salazar into the Devil’s Triangle where he and his crew became cursed. He swore revenge against Jack whom he nicknamed “Jack The Sparrow.” It was nice knowing that Barbossa had a daughter and also finding out where Jack got his name. While this movie performed the worst at the box office, those numbers only tell one part of the story as the movie wasn’t that bad.

3 Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

This was the second movie in the franchise, and fans were excited to know that there was going to be another Pirates Of The Caribbean movie. Here, our pirate hero had to deal with two villains that were breathing down his neck. Lord Becket wanted his compass and Davy Jones wanted his soul. In this movie, we got to see just how ambitious Captain Jack Sparrow can be.

He wasn’t content with just having the Black Pearl; he needed the heart of Davy Jones in order to Captain The Flying Dutchman. Will Turner also needed the heart to free his father from his curse and former Commodore, Norrington needed it to get his life back. It was interesting to see all parties fight over possession of the heart. The movie ended in a devastating defeat for Jack and his friends as Jack was taken by the Kraken and his ship along with him. This story was hilarious, heartbreaking, and overall entertaining.

2 Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End

This was by far the most anticipated movie in the entire franchise thanks to the fact that the previous one ended on a major cliffhanger. With Jack and his beloved Pearl dragged to Davy Jones’ Locker, Becket, who had possession of the heart, was destroying pirate ships with the aid of the Flying Dutchman. The Brethren Court Was summoned and Jack had to be present, so they went to fetch him from the locker. The fact that Jack was returning really excited his fans. The movie also shows how cunning Jack can be. He was able to fool Davy Jones, Lord Becket, and the Brethren Court in one very elaborate scheme to possess the Flying Dutchman. The return of Barbossa was also a very sweet shock to many, and it led to fans greatly anticipating this movie. The broad plot, followed by the exhilarating battle at the end, is what makes this movie one of the best in the franchise.

1 Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl

This was the first installment in the franchise, and it managed to outclass most of its successors. The movie was just perfect from start to finish and had a very satisfying ending. The film owes its success majorly to Johnny Depp because of the way he presented Captain Jack. From the beginning, it was obvious what type of character Jack would be. Though many mistook him as a failure for a pirate, it was later discovered that he captained The Black Pearl. After he was betrayed and lost The Pearl, he set out in search of a means to retake his beloved. The movie showed how he burrowed into the lives of Elizabeth and Will Turner, and how he became a part of their lives. The struggle to save Elizabeth from Barbossa, as well as obtaining the Pearl, made each scene captivating. This particular movie could have made a great video game. To this day, this movie is praised as the most satisfying one of all the installments in the franchise.
