Valheim: Bonemass Guide | Game Rant

It’s been two weeks since the early access launch of Valheim, Iron Gate’s Viking survival sim. The title has proved a surprise hit, selling over a million copies within just a few days of its release. Players have been drawn in by Valheim‘s intriguing world, tough survival mechanics, and co-op focus.

While there are many enemies in Valheim for players to overcome, the game’s five bosses are the hardest to beat. One of the toughest of them is Bonemass, a huge, amorphous blob-creature with a ton of hitpoints and the ability to summon minions. However, if players can manage to take down the blob, he’ll drop the valuable Wishbone item. With that goal in mind, here’s the best way to beat Bonemass in Valheim.

To summon Bonemass, players will need to first collect 10 Withered Bones. These Bones can be found in Muddy Scrap Piles and Sunken Crypts in Valheim‘s Swamp biome. Once the Withered Bones have been gathered, Bonemass can be summoned by using them on the Skull Altar, which is also found in the Swamp.

However, players will first want to make sure they’re ready to take on the boss. Bonemass is weak to Blunt damage, meaning that weapons like the Iron Mace, Iron Sledge, or Bronze Mace are highly effective. The unique weapon Stagbreaker is also a good choice, though it’s most useful for dealing with Bonemass’ summoned minions. Valheim‘s Frost arrows can be an effective, if expensive, choice, however all other Piercing weapons are highly ineffective. Finally, players should make sure they’ve got a good stock of Poison Resistance Mead, as Bonemass deals a lot of poison damage.

Once summoned, Bonemass will immediately start attacking. Though he isn’t fast, his movement is unstoppable and his attacks deal high damage. Bonemass uses three different attacks, based on the positioning of the players. If there are players within his reach, Bonemass will swipe at them with his hand for a large amount of damage. This attack can’t be parried in Valheim‘s combat system, but it can be dodged fairly easily with a roll. It’s a good tactic to have one player hold Bonemass’ aggro with dodging, while the others deal damage.

Occasionally, Bonemass will absorb a thick green cloud before releasing a wave of poison in all directions. While this poison isn’t so potent that players can’t move through it, standing directly in it is a bad idea. Finally, Bonemass will occasionally throw a glob from his armpit to summon Skeletons and Blobs. While these are some of the weaker enemies in Valheim, players will have to be careful when dealing with them at the same time as Bonemass. Once Bonemass has been defeated he will drop his Trophy as well as the Wishbone, which is used to find Muddy Scrap Piles, Silver Veins, and Buried Treasure.

Valheim is available now on PC.
