Cruella Trailer Shows Emma Stone Is Perfect For the Role

Movies like Malificent and Disney’s Descendants have proven that films based on iconic Disney villains can be massively successful. Disney clearly hopes to replicate that success with its latest villain-led project, Cruella. Disney has just released the first trailer for the film, with Emma Stone starring in the lead role.

Cruella follows the younger years of classic Disney villain Cruella De Vil, set before the events of 101 Dalmations. Emma Stone has put on a British accent for the role, which can be heard as she narrates over the course of the trailer. Unlike Malificent, the Cruella trailer does not seem to be asking the viewer to find Cruella nice or even the hero of the story. Her narration says things like, “I guess they were always scared that I’d be…a psycho” with a laugh and “The thing is, I was born brilliant, born bad, and a little bit mad.”

The visuals of the trailer are stunning, using the backdrop of 1970s London to full effect and featuring some amazing costumes on Cruella. Cruella starts the trailer with Emma Stone’s trademark red hair, before transitioning into the half black and half white hairdo that the character is known for. The movie appears to be a crime caper as Cruella takes on her naysayers, with the music and action sequences almost reminiscent of Harley Quinn. It’s clear that Emma Stone is giving her all to the role.

Coming out in May 2021, the Cruella trailer does not specify whether the film will be released in theatres, on Disney Plus, or both. The COVID-19 pandemic has made release schedules difficult to plan, especially for big releases like this one. Films like Mulan and Soul were given Disney Plus premieres, while other projects like Marvel’s Black Widow have been delayed in hope of a theatrical premiere. It’s also possible Disney’s 2021 releases could follow the example of Warner Bros. films and simultaneously release in theatres and on streaming.

Other upcoming Disney films include new animated originals Raya and the Last Dragon and Luca, as well as the live action Jungle Cruise movie starring Dwayne Johnson. Cruella is not the only live action remake or retelling to come soon–Peter Pan and Wendy and the new Cinderella aim to be released this year, and a live action The Little Mermaid is currently in production.

Cruella is set to be released May 28 2021.
