Releasing on PC in October last year, Second Extinction is a fast-paced, chaotic, multiplayer dinosaur shooter where players have to liberate a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by mutated, prehistoric foes. Back when it was announced last year, Second Extinction was confirmed to be heading to Xbox, and today, Microsoft gave console players looking forward to the upcoming co-op game a firmer release window.
The announcement was made via a brand new trailer showing off more of Second Extinction’s gameplay, confirming that the title will be heading to Xbox Game Preview in Spring this year. Similar to its PC counterpart, it will be debuting in early-access, with it remaining a part of Xbox Game Preview until it releases a full, final build in the future.
The trailer itself sees several players drop in pods from a spaceship to the surface of earth, emerging to battle back waves of ferocious dinosaurs with an array of weapons and gadgets. The footage does a good job of showing the wide range of equipment players can use to battle foes, including a deployable radar that highlights threats, an electric fence that can be placed to stun enemies, and a giant sky laser that can be brought down upon hordes.
Of course, both the bloodthirsty dinosaurs and the range of guns players can use to eliminate them are on display too, with everything from colossal T-rexes to luminescent velociraptors showing up in the scuffles. Players will be able to fight back with an array of shotguns, grenade launchers, assault rifles, miniguns, and more, with the arsenal appearing to contain plenty of firepower. Seeing as the game currently boasts mostly positive user reviews on Steam, it’s sure to find an audience when it crosses over to the console market later this year.
For those who haven’t seen much of Second Extinction since its release, the game takes place after a cataclysmic apocalyptic event where mutated dinosaurs overtook the earth. Players take the role of humans looking to push back against earth’s new inhabitants, grouping together into squads of 3 to eradicate their enemies. The game focuses on teamwork and the strength of its community, with online players around the world having to come together to complete missions and prevent the dinosaurs from growing in strength and numbers. With the game currently in early access, Second Extinction’s developers, Systemic Reaction, are asking players for their feedback and complaints to help the title achieve its goal of becoming a wholly unique online first-person shooter.
Second Extinction is out now in early access on PC, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions slated to release this Spring.
