The ever-popular Pyra leapfrogged Rex to become the second representative from the Xenoblade Chronicles series to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Seeing as Pyra is an Aegis, a legendary blade taking human form, it should come as no surprise she is a sword-wielding fighter. As a fire-elemental, Pyra’s move set features a number of blazing attacks that keep foes at a distance. Similar to Zelda and Sheik in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Pyra can transform into Mythra, granting her access to an entirely new move set filled with light-based attacks. The duo is set to arrive in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in March 2021.

There is no place Cloud can escape from Sephiroth, not even Super Smash Bros. The iconic Final Fantasy VII villain made his shocking reveal at The Game Awards 2020, nearly impaling Mario to the tune of “One-Winged Angel.” Sephiroth’s infamous Masamune katana grants him the longest range of any sword-wielding combatant in Super Smash Bros. history. After activating his Wing Form, Sephiroth is granted an extra jump and super armor on all of his smash attacks. His relentless move set rewards an aggressive playstyle and quickly established Cloud’s rival as a fearsome opponent.

Given the immense popularity of Minecraft, it was only a matter of time before this pair of pixels got their Super Smash Bros. invite. Steve and Alex have brought all of their usual mining tools, including TNT, elytra wings, minecarts, and plenty of deadly weaponry. With pickaxe in hand, the duo is able to mine materials around the stage to create attack-absorbing blocks. These blockheads bring one-of-a-kind mechanics to the battlefield and have proven themselves as deadly trapper characters, similar to Pac-Man and Snake.

As one of the flagship fighting games for the Nintendo Switch, it makes sense for ARMS’ ramen-obsessed martial artist to kick off the second Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass 2. Min Min sports one of the longest reaches of any character in the game, making her a fierce zoner like Simon and Richter. Players control Min Min’s arms individually using the A and B buttons respectively, a gameplay mechanic entirely unique to the Mintendo Noodle House heiress. With the ability to swap arms, each equipped with different effects, opponents must keep their distance in order to find the right openings.

With each new Fire Emblem game, a Super Smash Bros. character reveal is sure to follow behind it, evidently. Byleth joined the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster as the game’s eighth representative from the exceedingly popular JRPG franchise. Like their fellow Fire Emblem comrades, Byleth controls distance with large hitboxes to zone out opponents at mid-range. The Fire Emblem: Three Houses protagonist comes equipped with a variety of weapons outside of their sword, including a lance, an axe, and a bow. This allows players to enter each fight with plenty of tools to make their approach.

SNK, known for its Fatal Fury and King of Fighters titles, chose Terry Bogard as its leading man in Super Smash Bros. Similar to Ryu and Ken, the “South Town Hero” has a move set that pays homage to 2D fighting roots. Fans will recognize his Burning Knuckle, Rising Tackle, and Power Dunk – all of which increase in effectiveness by utilizing their SNK inputs. Rare’s iconic platforming duo, Banjo & Kazooie, joined the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster with a cross-species friendship to rival that of Duck Hunt. Kazooie in particular brings a number of useful tools to their move set. Kazooie provides projectile attacks in the form of eggs and can help the duo traverse the stage quickly while sprinting. Additionally, her wing and beak attacks provide plenty of effective tilts. Effectively utilizing the pair’s Wonderwing resources and Shock Spring Jump special make Banjo & Kazooie an all-around menace to keep off stage.

After the arrival of the eleventh installment in the Dragon Quest series, the heroes of the legendary franchise made their chaotic entrance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Known simply as Hero, this character’s random move set created so much havoc that they were being banned from tournaments. Hero’s controversial Down Special “Command Selection” and critical hit mechanic created cries for nerfs in the Smash community thanks to the unpredictability of his attacks. The “RNG God” brings an infinite number of possibilities to each fight that can either lead to a player’s demise or their glory.

Hot on the heels of Persona 5’s critically acclaimed release, Joker appeared to steal the hearts of his opponents in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Wielding a knife and a gun, the Persona protagonist utilizes quick movement and speedy attacks to pressure opponents into making disastrous mistakes. Joker summons his Persona, Arsene, to briefly power up his attacks once his Rebellion Gauge fills. The leader of the Phantom Thieves quickly became a regular selection at tournaments thanks to his excellent move lag, combo proficiency, and top-tier mobility.

Nobody saw it coming. Piranha Plant was hilariously unveiled as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s very first DLC character as a bonus for players who bought the game during its early release window. Typically lurking beneath the surface in the Super Mario franchise, Piranha Plant came out of the shadows to bring the fight to Mario himself. Lumbering around in an oversized flower pot, Piranha Plant is as deadly as he looks.

The Super Mario enemy utilizes poison clouds, metal spiky balls, and a long-range bite to trap enemies into dangerous scenarios. With its excellent recovery, projectiles, and lethal down air, Piranha Plant has proven itself to be a fearsome competitor once it gets its opponents off-stage.
