It’s been three years since the Nintendo Switch launched, and its success is undeniable. The versatility of the console, which allows owners to use it in stationary and handheld mode, as well as the many titles available for it, suggests that fans aren’t going to see a decline in sales anytime soon – or a new console.
This was just confirmed by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, who said the Nintendo Switch is expected to last another four years on the market, which means there will not be a new generation of consoles dropping any time soon.
However, Furukawa stated that there is a constant effort to research new technology to further improve Nintendo’s hardware. Consequently, even though Nintendo might not announce another console in 2021, it plans to keep the Switch updated while it starts planning the next generation of its consoles.
Nintendo has stated that it has sold over 80 million Switch consoles worldwide as of last December. The Nintendo Switch has sold better than the PS2, PS4, and Wii had during the same time periods, meaning that the Nintendo Switch is one of the best-selling consoles of all time, and could break further records.
Despite the Switch’s success, Nintendo is aware that the positive attention the console has been getting could disappear at any moment, as other companies fight to get the public’s attention. Furukawa is aware that keeping Nintendo’s products fresh is key to maintain its success, which is why Nintendo strives to offer a wide range of software. It means that Switch’s sales continue increasing, and eventually overtake the Wii, one of Nintendo’s other iconic consoles.
While many fans are probably disappointed that there is not going to be a new Nintendo console release in the near future, this might be good news for Switch users. On one hand, this means that the Nintendo Switch will continue to expand its game offering and, if the console keeps up with its sales streak, this might mean that more interesting titles will be available for the console during the upcoming years.
At the moment, fans can at least expect some of the new games which were just announced during the Nintendo Direct stream. Some of the most exciting titles include Splatoon 3, Tales of the Borderlands, Miitopia, and Star Wars: Hunters, to name a few. Switch users can also expect new editions of Switch hardware, such as the new Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Edition Joy-Cons.
