Ever since Disney’s acquisition of Star Wars, players have wondered what future Star Wars games will be like. Since EA lost its exclusivity license to make Star Wars games, many fans wondered what the next Star Wars game will be and who makes it. That question has now received an answer.
During Nintendo Direct, the newest Star Wars game was announced by Lucasfilm Games and developer Zynga, called Star Wars: Hunters. The game is described as a free-to-play competitive multiplayer game that will be released for the Nintendo Switch later this year. It will not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership to download and play online. Coinciding with the recent announcement was a teaser trailer for Star Wars: Hunters and a brief description details what type of game it will be.
This may be the same Zynga Star Wars game mentioned during an earnings call last week. According to the Star Wars Blog, Star Wars: Hunters will be a competitive arena combat game that has pits players against one another. The game will feature brand new Star Wars characters and locations for them to fight in.
The game takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire, and while the teaser trailer doesn’t reveal too much, it does show off a holographic lineup of the new characters in the game. The first is a lightsaber-wielding female warrior resembling a Nightsister, a stormtrooper with a minigun-like weapon, a Mandalorian bounty hunter, and a dual mace-wielding Wookie warrior.
Lucasfilm Games’ VP, Douglas Reilly, said that the game will draw inspiration from previous Star Wars stories and locations while providing something that’s distinguished from past games. “Star Wars: Hunters draws inspiration from classic Star Wars stories and settings, but with a look and feel that is different from anything we have done before.” He voiced his excitement to bring this new game to Star Wars fans on the Nintendo Switch and can’t wait to show players more of its “wildly creative cast of characters.”
The game is multiplayer, but it’s unclear if it will have a story or significant connection to Star Wars‘ current continuity. The game could introduce new characters that crossover into some of the films, comics, and TV shows. It’s also possible that they only show up in the game, never to be seen again. Lucasfilm Games still has more announcements to make, so players should keep an eye out for more news.
Star Wars: Hunters will be free-to-play with a planned 2021 release for the Nintendo Switch.
