As WandaVision gets ready to come to its conclusion, the show is revealing more and more about its complex story. However, with precious few episodes remaining, the mystery continues to grow with many questions still left unanswered. With countless fan theories floating around, it would seem that most of the possibilities have been covered. But one question remains overlooked by many fans and could have huge repercussions: who is Agnes’ husband Ralph?
Wanda and Vision’s nosy neighbor, Agnes (Kathryn Hahn), has been a regular fixture on WandaVision and has been the subject of many fan theories herself. Up until now, her husband Ralph has remained unseen and has mostly been used as a punchline for a bunch of cheesy old sitcom jokes by Agnes.
Certainly, the neighbor complaining about her less-than-stellar husband is a trope of the sitcom world and the name “Ralph” could be a reference to Jackie Gleason’s famous character of Ralph Kramden from the 1950s sitcom The Honeymooners. While he could remain an unseen target of insults, he could also be the lurking threat at the center of the whole series.
In the third episode of the show, it seemed to reveal that Wanda was actually the villain of the series and responsible for what was happening in Westview. She is shown being able to control the reality she has created, blocking out any disruptions that might break the illusion. She knows that this is all an illusion and is willing to battle S.W.O.R.D. in order to maintain the false reality. However, there are also hints that someone else may be pulling the strings in all of this.
Wanda did start her time in the MCU as a villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron but has since been proving herself to be a great hero. It could be that the death of Vision in Avengers: Endgame sent her over the edge, but it could also be that it simply made her vulnerable for some other powerful being to manipulate her into creating this new reality. While Wanda seemed to be in control of everything in Westview, the arrival of her brother Pietro seems to have confused her. She notices that he looks different and Pietro acknowledges that he knows she has created all of this, even complimenting her on it all. This has led many to believe someone is influencing Wanda and encouraging this dark path she is on. In other words, the show’s true villain has yet to reveal themselves.
If there is still a big bad villain waiting to be revealed, it seems as though they would need to already be in Westview. If Pietro was indeed created by someone else, then that person would have needed to be inside the Hex. And Ralph feels like the prime candidate. While some have suggested Agnes is the real villain and will be revealed to be Agatha Harkness, episode 6 shows she was under Wanda’s spell like everyone else. But it could be that Agnes is actually just reporting to someone else.
All her barging in unannounced could be more than friendly neighbor behavior and she could be spying on behalf of someone who prefers to remain in the shadows. Some fans have picked up on certain cryptic things Agnes has said that might hint at something darker. When the neighborhood loses its power, Agnes shrugs it off by saying “Ralph looks better in the dark.” And when Dottie remarks that “the devil’s in the details,” Agnes replies, “That’s not the only place he is.” Are these harmless jokes, or does Agnes know something more?
One possibility for Ralph’s true is Nightmare, the Lord of the Dream Dimension. Nightmare is a Doctor Strange villain who controls people’s dreams. He has also been rumored to be the villain in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness for some time, and since Wanda will appear in that movie, it is possible he’ll appear in WandaVision first. Also, a being that can control dreams seems to fit with want is happening to Wanda. However, the most popular theory about the big bad the show will introduce is Mephisto,
In the Marvel universe, Mephisto is basically the devil who has a long history of battling various heroes and even plotted to steal the Infinity Stones from Thanos. It would make sense that he would be the devil on Wanda’s shoulder, so to speak, and he could be using her to get the Mind Stone which presumably brought Vision back to life. Through his own extensive magical powers, Mephisto could have disguised himself as Pietro to distract Wanda and keep her invested in the false reality.
As the end draws clear, it feels like Ralph will show himself at any time now. Vision is actively fighting against Wanda’s control. Wanda seems to not trust Pietro. Now seems like the moment for the puppet master to come forward. Paul Bettany has said he shared “pretty intense” scenes on the show with an actor he’s always wanted to work with.
This seems to suggest there is at least one more huge character reveal coming and the promise of intense scenes makes it seem like it will indeed be a villain as well as a big-name actor. It could be that WandaVision is about to reveal not only its own main villain but also one of the new major villains of the entire MCU.
WandaVision is currently streaming on Disney+.
