Fans of old-school Blizzard games should get excited because an Arcade Collection has been rated. In the ramp up to BlizzCon 2021 later today, a leak has revealed an upcoming Blizzard title combining three classic games.
Started back in 1991 under the name Silicon & Synapse, Inc. Blizzard has an extensive background in game making. While the group is now famous for major titles like World of Warcraft and the Diablo series, it has entries from as early as the 1990s. With BlizzCon 2021’s schedule continuing the tradition, recent leaks suggest that fans will be able to dive into the company’s history through this special collection.
From the listing, the Blizzard Arcade Collection will include three games from the early days. Fans may be familiar with these titles from the developer’s past, Lost Vikings 1, Rock & Roll Racing, and Blackthorne. Supposedly, the actual release date for this anthology will be February 19 on PC. Therefore, it is likely that this entry is a quick drop either during or after the upcoming Blizzard convention.
Hardcore followers of Blizzard’s timeline will know that these three titles are some of the earliest by the group. First up is Lost Vikings 1 which originally came out in 1993 and takes players into a side-scrolling adventure of three Vikings. Blizzard even revealed concept art of this game for its 30th Anniversary. The second game Rock & Roll Racing also launched in 1993, combining fast-paced racing with metal and rock tunes by actual bands like Black Sabbath. In 1994 Blackthorne launched, and meshed cinematic storytelling with platforming game mechanics.
With a lot of announcements for BlizzCon 2021 leaking early, another reveal is not surprising. Of all the announcements so far, like a Diablo 2 remake, the Blizzard Arcade Collection will likely fly under the radar. However, for major Blizzard fans, a retro anthology could be an exciting prospect. As the world moves towards digital gaming, it is becoming harder and harder to preserve old titles. With a collection coming to PC, players both old and new to Blizzard can experience these games from its history.
That said, news of the Blizzard Arcade Collection could still fall on deaf ears should the other announcements be disappointing. So far, players know that Diabl0 4 and Overwatch 2 are not releasing anytime soon. These are highly anticipated titles that gamers could still be waiting a while to play. It is hard to believe that retro games from decades ago will be a sufficient replacement for these modern experiences. Overall, BlizzCon 2021 should have plenty of reveals and this Arcade Collection confirms the potential.
