The Pokemon games are full of unique and imaginative locations. The individual regions, each with their own cities, routes, caves, and waterways, give the player an almost endless world that they can explore to their heart’s content.
And these entertaining locales do of course feature heavily in the Pokemon anime as well. Many of the show’s pivotal plot points take place in them, but that doesn’t mean the show is without some original settings. Even in the first few seasons of the show when it took place in the Kanto Region, audiences could look forward to seeing places that were brand new.
10 Pokemon Theme Park
Featured in the short, “Pikachu’s Vacation,” the Pokemon Theme Park is a massive amusement center where trainers can leave their Pokemon so they can enjoy a day of fun activities. It’s similar to a Pokemon Daycare in that regard.
Despite the name, the theme park is more reminiscent of the Safari Zone. There are many parts of the parks that would fit in well in a nature preserve or a city park, such as its stream, swimming pool, and climbing frame. There also many places where tired Pokemon can simply choose to relax and take a nap.
9 Leaf Forest
The Leaf Forest was a mysterious forest that appeared in”The March of the Exeggutor Squad.” It is home to many Pokemon, including the likes of Oddish, Dodrio, and Bellsprout, but it is most notable for being home to a large population of Exeggutors.
This forest is mysterious because it can have an unexplainable influence on Pokemon that causes them to evolve. It has the same effect as a Leaf Stone does on Grass-Type Pokemon. Once they are within the confines of the forest, certain Grass-Type Pokemon might evolve without provocation.
8 Hidden Village
Found between Cerulean City and Vermilion City, the Hidden Village is a secluded haven for Pokemon that have been abandoned by their trainers. A woman named Melanie lives in the village and takes care of the unfortunate Pokemon. The village is also protected by a Bulbasaur that volunteered to keep the other Pokemon safe.
This village appeared in the episode “Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village.” It was in this episode and in this village that Ash learns that not all trainers are respectable. It is also where he, at Melanie’s suggestion, catches the aforementioned Bulbasaur.
7 Mt. Hideaway
Mt. Hideaway is a mountain found near Pallet Town, Ash’s hometown. Ash and his friends explore this peak in the “To Master the Onixpected!” episode. While exploring, the kids meet and converse and Bruno, one of the Kanto Region’s Elite Four. Throughout the episode, Bruno imparts wisdom about Pokemon training to the young trainers.
The kids also learn about the existence of massive Onix that live on the mountain. These Onix grow large by absorbing an unknown mineral in the soil. And because of their size, they are often the targets of ambitious trainers who want to capture large and powerful Pokemon.
6 Camomile Island
Debuting in “Odd Pokémon Out!” Camomile Island is a nature reserve managed by Nurse Joy. It is a hospitable island covered in grassy plains and forests, making it an ideal haven for many different types of wild Pokemon.
When Ash and his friends arrive on the island, a series of misunderstandings cause many of the wild Pokemon and Ash’s Pokemon to pick fights with each other, leaving them in need of Nurse Joy’s help to resolve the issues. It is also on this island that Ash’s Grovyle evolves into Sceptile.
5 Dragonite Island
As its name suggests, Dragonite Island is home to many Dragonites, as well as the other members of the Dratini evolution family. In fact, members of that evolution family are the only type of Pokemon that live on the island. Wanting to keep their home safe and secluded, these Pokemon, the Dragonairs in particular, use their powers to manipulate the weather to cast large clouds all around the island to keep outsiders from spotting it.
Ash explored this island in “A Test in Paradise!” Once on the island, he is able to see that it is a lush ecosystem with forests, beaches, rivers, and other ideal elements for Pokemon to live and thrive in. Not wanting to disturb the Pokemon’s peace, he and the other humans choose to let their islands remain a secret.
4 Bill’s Lighthouse
This lighthouse appeared in the aptly-titled episode, “Mystery at the Lighthouse.” Resting somewhere outside of Cerulean City, the lighthouse is the home of the famous Pokemon researcher, Bill. Bill is the creator of the Pokemon Storage System.
This large lighthouse was built at the top of a cliff peak that overlooks the beaches near Cerulean City. It serves as Bill’s research facility. From it, Bill studies the rare and mysterious Pokemon of the world and catalogs his research. His hope is that he will discover never-before-seen Pokemon from his prime viewing spot.
3 Dark City
Ash visited Dark City in “Showdown at Dark City.” Dark City is a town stuck in a rundown state, which was caused by the Pokemon battles that are fought repeatedly throughout it. For this reason, most citizens of the town dislike all Pokemon trainers.
The reason that there are so many battles is that two gyms found in the town have been at odds with each other for years. Both gyms also seek to become an official Pokemon League gym. The problem is that each gym sees the other as a hurdle to achieve that goal, so they want to drive each other out of town.
2 Hollywood
An uncommon feature for the series, Hollywood is a town that is an obvious reimagining of a real-world city. It does not feature any direct references or landmarks from the real Hollywood, but it does have the general similarity of being a metropolis that is home to the film industry.
The biggest difference between this Hollywood and the real one is that the majority of the Kanto Region’s Hollywood is nearly deserted. When Ash and the others arrive in Hollywood in the episode “Go West Young Meowth,” they are surprised to discover that not many people live there. They learn that the cost of producing films has become far too great in recent years and that all but the few elite sections have been on the decline for that reason.
1 New Island
New Island was the central location for the first Pokemon movies, Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back. The island is home to a secret Team Rocket research facility. It is here that Dr. Fuji creates the mutated Mew clone, Mewtwo.
Mewtwo, after destroying the lab and later breaking free of Team Rocket’s control, returns to the abandoned island and turns it into his base of operations. Mewtwo then creates a massive castle on the island, and from within it, it devises a plan to locate powerful Pokemon to capture and clone. Once Mewtwo does that, it will use its powers to destroy humanity and all other Pokemon, whom it sees as a threat to the world.
