Valheim Developer Humbled by the Game’s Success | Game Rant

There could be little doubt that Valheim has taken the PC gaming world by storm recently. This Viking-themed open world survival sandbox seems to have come out of nowhere, but has made a name for itself, and its developer, by selling three million copies in just a matter of weeks. Unsurprisingly, Iron Gate Studios, the developer behind the game, has had quite the shock over how successful it’s become.

In a recent interview, the studio’s co-founder, Henrik Törnqvist, has said that the community response and subsequent interest in Valheim has been a “humbling experience.” While he was aware that the game would likely sell quite well, he and the rest of the team were unprepared for how popular their game would be, which is currently sitting pretty with a review score of “Overwhelmingly Positive” on Steam.

Törnqvist even said one of his favorite things to do since the game launched was to check out some of the impressive builds fans were constructing via the subreddit. He also wished to thank all the players who had bought the game and helped make it the runaway success it has become. Valheim‘s publisher, Coffee Stain Publishing, echoed Törnqvist’s words, stating that it too was optimistic about the game’s success but have been blown away by the reaction it’s received in such a short space of time. It also said that while there were high hopes for the game, any hint at selling millions of copies in a short span of time was deemed laughable. At the time of writing, the game is being enjoyed by millions of gamers, sitting up there alongside other huge hits such as Phasmophobia and Among Us.

The overall aim of the game is to survive as Vikings in the afterlife where players must fight, build and craft tools. It’s only been in out since the beginning of February, but it’s already having a huge impact on the gaming community. Looking at the success of Valheim, it arguably could give other survival sandbox games, such as Subnautica, The Forest or The Long Dark a run for their money.

With the game increasing in popularity, and Iron Gate Studios being made up of just five people, Törnqvist concluded the interview by stating the developer will be on the lookout for some new hires in the future. Who knows what awaits the future of Valheim, but it’s safe to assume that this continuing, and impressive, success that these five people have achieved will be something that will live with the team until they reach Valhalla.
