What the Diablo 4 Rogue Reveal Means for the Fifth and Final Class

Diablo 4 fans have been waiting for a new class reveal for a long time now. Everyone expected BlizzConline to finally reveal at least one, and it didn’t disappoint. The digital conference opened with a trailer for the Rogue. This dexterous new character is exactly what the game was missing: a high-speed, high-skill character who could use ranged weapons and lightweight melee weapons alike. She looks like she comes with all kinds of extraordinary powers, rivaling even Diablo 3‘s Demon Hunter in terms of magical archery. She’ll fit in nicely in the ranks of the Barbarian, the Sorceress, and the Druid, going a long way to round out the team.

Now that the Rogue is in for Diablo 4fans can rest easy about Dexterity based options as well as ranged weapons. However, although the Rogue answers a lot of questions about the game’s class offerings, it also raises quite a few. What does Blizzard think Diablo 4 is missing at this point? It’s done well filling out the roster so far. The game offers everything from high impact melee classes to spellcasters to the new, nimble, high DPS Rogue. It seems likely that the last class in Diablo 4 will be something new and creative. Now that the game’s roster is fairly complete, Blizzard has some wiggle room to do something fun.

There’s a couple directions that Blizzard could go for a creative final class. Diablo 4 notably doesn’t have a character focused on heavy armor and shields, for instance. If it wants to kill two birds with one stone by adding a character that uses that kind of equipment and also wields dark magic — another niche so far unfilled — Blizzard could always take a page out of World of Warcraft‘s book and put a Death Knight in Diablo 4. Alternatively, it could go for a simpler, more traditional Knight or Warrior class that focuses on martial skill rather than supplementing heavy armor with magic.

Alternatively, it could be something much stranger. There’s no healer class in Diablo 4and fans have been wondering if Blizzard wants to make a Healer or Priest class of some kind. Diablo doesn’t generally have classes focused specifically on supporting other players, so it’d be interesting to see how such a class would be integrated into the game. Alternatively, Blizzard might have a second Dexterity focused class up its sleeve. A Bard could come back from the brink and offer a whole new kind of skillset to the game. A blend of light weapons, healing skills, and crowd control heavy magic sounds like great fun.

Blizzard is free to push its boundaries and do something even more surprising. For instance, if it wants to come up with a whole new kind of Strength class, a heavy armored Artificer inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons class could appear. It’d be fascinating to see a heavily armored magic user with advanced gadgets and magic items. Beating demons with both physical might and engineering wit sounds pretty satisfying. Whatever the last class is, the more unique it is, the better. Diablo 4 has been a major nostalgia trip so far, but variety is the spice of life. A whole new kind of class would be great.

Still, it’s possible that Blizzard wants Diablo 4 to be a tour of nostalgia. A Paladin wouldn’t be out of place in the ranks of Diablo 4‘s classes, offering both the heavy armor and holy magic that the game is missing. Alternatively, now that there’s two ranged classes in the game, Blizzard could consider putting the Monk in Diablo 4, which would also add some worthwhile magic and Dexterity based options. Whatever ends up taking the last spot in Diablo 4‘s class roster, it should fit in one way or another. The team thus far has room for whatever Blizzard has to offer.

Diablo 4 is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
