With the reveal of the fourth Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Endwalker, Square Enix has also revealed that two brand new jobs will be coming to the MMO. The first is a new healing job called Sage, which was revealed at the latest online event. However, Square Enix also stated that the second job will not be revealed until the digital Fan Fest in May.
Though the second job remains shrouded in mystery, fans have already started guessing the possibilities given the hints that have been revealed so far. At the most recent online event, Square Enix has confirmed that the new Final Fantasy 14 job will be melee DPS, and will likely share an armor set with the current Dragoon job. Apart from that, nothing has been revealed about the new job and fans have been left to speculate.
Although players have disagreed on the supposed name for the new Final Fantasy 14 melee DPS job, there seems to be a consensus that a scythe-based job is likely coming based on the most recent expansion, Shadowbringers. During Shadowbringers, one of the key antagonists that players encounter is Ran’jit, a hardened general who specialized in martial arts and wielded a scythe.
Fans have been speculating that a hybrid DPS job would be likely, and Ran’jit’s mix of melee and magic combat would be a perfect style to emulate. Similar to the Red Mage job but inversed, a new hybrid DPS job would likely focus on melee damage for the majority of fights but include big bursts of spells to cycle through.
Moreover, the reveal that the new job will share the same armor set as Dragoon has helped lend credence to this theory, as Ran’jit forms together with a dragon during the Shadowbringers storyline and it becomes a part of his outfit. As Ran’jit is based on Golbez from Final Fantasy 4, and Endwalker appears to be pulling inspiration from that game, it seems likely that a hybrid DPS job should serve as a callback for veteran fans. Series director Naoki Yoshida also loves to drop abstract hints based on the shirts he wears to events, and his latest choice of a skeleton in a hood has fans speculating that the scythe-wielding job may be called Reaper.
Another common guess from Final Fantasy 14 fans appears to be the Mystic Knight or Rune Fencer job from previous Final Fantasy games. The core theme behind a Mystic Knight job is similar to the Reaper speculation, in that it will focus on a hybrid build between melee and magic damage. As the Mystic Knight job is a recurring job from the Final Fantasy series, it would be a little easier to implement and would function as an actual callback to previous games. In previous games, the Mystic Knight would imbue magic into their swords to deal a variety of damage to their foes.
Notably, Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers featured the Warrior of Light boss who appeared to take on the style of a Mystic Knight. Imbuing fire, ice, holy, and earth elements into a sword, the Warrior of Light was able to deal a variety of elemental damage to players. A potential Mystic Knight class in Final Fantasy 14 would likely function in a similar way.
Though the playstyle of a hybrid DPS class might be a little awkward to learn, current Final Fantasy 14 jobs like Samurai prove that cast times aren’t inherently bad on melee rotations. While the name of the class has not been revealed, both a Reaper and Mystic Knight class offer unique possibilities and callbacks for veteran fans of Final Fantasy. Although the speculation will have to continue until May, it seems likely that the new DPS job will be a hybrid between melee and magic damage.
Final Fantasy 14 is currently available on PC and PS4, with PS5 support coming later in 2021. Endwalker will release in Fall 2021.
