With no news of an official Final Fantasy 8 remake on the horizon, one fan has taken matters into their own hands. Computer graphics artist CG_YasinSafak posted a photorealistic model of Dr. Kadowaki’s Infirmary, giving fellow fans a glimpse at what a modern Final Fantasy 8 title might look like.
CG_YasinSafak shared their personal project with the Qhimm community, a forum dedicated to celebrating the iconic Final Fantasy series. Inspired by their love for Final Fantasy 8, CG_YasinSafak began modeling locations found throughout the series. The talented CG artist introduced the project with their own take on Dr. Kadowaki’s infirmary, complete with the same fixed-camera angles found in the original Final Fantasy 8 scene.
The side-by-side comparisons of the scene displays CG_YasinSafak’s careful attention to detail while recapturing the aesthetic of Balamb Garden’s infirmary. Every object in the room has been brought to life, including a fully-realized bottle of Final Fantasy 8 elixir. When compared to the rough backgrounds of Final Fantasy 8 Remastered, CG_YasinSafak’s work is incredibly impressive.
In response to a comment on their post, CG_YasinSafak divulged the tools that helped them breathe new life into the aged infirmary. The entire scene was created from scratch, beginning with a program called 3ds Max 2021 to model. After the initial model was made, they utilized V-Ray 5 and Photoshop to handle the lighting, retouching, and compositing of the room.
Despite the release of Final Fantasy 8 Remastered in 2019, some fans believe the Square Enix classic deserves a full-fledged remake. The remaster gave today’s modern audience the opportunity to re-experience one of the most beloved entries in the Final Fantasy series as it was presented in 1999 with new enhancements. Nevertheless, the remaster highlighted aspects of the game that have proven to age poorly. The once award-winning cutscenes now appear a bit bland and sluggish.
With the recent success of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the door for remakes of other titles in the series remains open. While it appears that Square Enix will be focusing on expanding the world of Final Fantasy 7, the demand from fans has been made clear.
The biggest obstacle in the way of a Final Fantasy 8 remake is time. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was extremely ambitious, taking five years to release after it was announced at E3 in 2015. Though the title received a great reception from both fans and critics alike, the game only covered about half of the first of four discs included in the PS1 release. Square Enix has a lot of ground to cover future Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequels before considering a new remake project.
