Stardew Valley: How to Solve The Mermaid Puzzle on Ginger Island

Update 1.5 for Stardew Valley introduces plenty of unique and interesting puzzles to keep fans engrossed. Many fans notice a rock-bound Mermaid when they get to Stardew Valley’s Ginger Island, and some wonder how they can solve her puzzle.

The Mermaid Puzzle can be found in Pirate Cove, where a line of rocks rest along the shore, one carved with the shape of a musical note. If the player can make music with these rocks, and match the Mermaid’s song from Stardew Valley’s Night Market, they will be rewarded with five Golden Walnuts.

To solve the puzzle, Stardew Valley players must take five Flute Blocks to Pirate Cove on a rainy day (those who don’t want to wait can always use a Rain Totem to guarantee that the next day will bring showers). The key to the puzzle is found in Journal Scrap #9, particularly the line that reads “Aye…stones as big as pennies and stones as big as nickels were they…” The rocks on the shore indicate the number of clicks required to tune each Flute Block to the right note, so this line in the Journal Scrap tells the player that small rocks represent one click (a “penny”), and the large rocks represent five clicks (“nickel”).

Fans may notice that a Flute Block automatically begins to play the first note as soon as it’s placed. This counts as “one,” so each pile of rocks requires a number of clicks equal to their clue, minus one. For example, the first pile (from left to right) has two “pennies,” meaning the player must lay a Flute Block, then click the block one time (two small rocks minus one – the first note – equals one).

The second pile has two “nickels” and one penny, which equals 11, so players must click the Flute Block for this pile 10 times. The third pile (one nickel and four pennies) requires eight clicks, the fourth (one nickel) requires four, and the last pile requires six clicks, as the nickel and two pennies equal seven.

Once all five blocks have been placed and tuned, the player must return to the carved rock at the beginning, then run straight past all five blocks, from left to right. This causes the blocks to play their notes, and sing the Mermaid’s song. If successful, the mermaid will smile, wave, and throw out five Stardew Valley Golden Walnuts to the player.

The task complete, players are free to return to their farming or to search out more puzzles to tackle. Because of world-building challenges like the Mermaid Puzzle, which are fun and rewarding while still being accessible, Stardew Valley is a great game to introduce non-gamers to the world of gaming.

Stardew Valley is available now for Linux, Mac, Mobile, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One.
