Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead Sets May Release Date | Game Rant

Zack Snyder has revealed his latest movie, Army of the Dead, will drop on Netflix on May 21. The film sees a team of mercenaries plotting a heist in Las Vegas in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista will star in the project, which will mark Snyder’s first foray into feature-length filmmaking since the debacle of Justice League.

Although it was initially developed as a sequel to the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, which marked Snyder’s directorial debut, the current incarnation of the project has no connection to the director’s previous zombie movie. The original script for Army of the Dead was set to be directed Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., who went on to helm the 2011 prequel to The Thing, but Snyder decided to take the reins himself after the project had stalled in development hell for years.

A lot of movies that were planned for a theatrical release have been forced into streaming by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Army of the Dead was always due to release on Netflix, even before the virus existed. The streamer acquired the distribution rights to the movie from Warner Bros. to save it from development hell. With a high-concept premise and a reported budget of $90 million, Army of the Dead is poised to be one of Netflix’s biggest summer blockbusters this year.

In addition to directing Army of the Dead, Snyder is also co-writing and co-producing the film, in addition to doing the cinematograph, meaning his distinct filmmaking style will be seen all over it. He wrote the initial story for the movie before fleshing it out into a full screenplay with co-writers Shay Hatten and Joby Harold. The director and his wife Deborah Snyder are producing the movie through their production company The Stone Quarry.

Chris D’Elia had filmed a role in the movie, but in August 2020, after he was accused of grooming multiple underage girls, he was was removed from the project and replaced by Tig Notaro. Notaro was added into Army of the Dead with a combination of digitally inserting her into scenes and reshooting scenes with fellow cast members.

Ahead of Army of the Dead’s release on Netflix, the fabled “Snyder cut” of Justice League is set to finally drop on HBO Max on March 18. As for Snyder’s next project, there are a few potential movies he’s mentioned, including a 300-style biopic of George Washington and a gritty, realistic take on the Arthurian legend.

Army of the Dead will be released on Netflix on May 21, 2021.
