Dying Light 2 Developer Techland Reportedly Fostering Hostile Work Environment

Dying Light 2 has been a highly anticipated game since it was announced back in 2018. However, it seems that Dying Light 2 development is not going well.

The production of Dying Light 2 has been a rocky road. The game experienced significant delays, causing the original 2020 release date to be pushed back indefinitely. Techland, the studio behind the game, is an independent Polish triple-A developer that got its start back in 1991. Today the company has two locations and approximately 400 employees. The staff hiring page boasts a fun work environment, with strong growth potential and a creative atmosphere. New allegations report that this may not hold true.

A recent exposé by TheGamer revealed the toxic nature of the work environment at Techland. The article cites the company’s CEO, Pawel Marchewka as the root cause behind the problem. Anonymous employees report that they are consistently told their work is “too f****t like,” with no other specific criticism given. Anecdotes all reveal the same story, that the studio has no production pipeline, and when experts from well known companies are brought in to implement one, Marchewka eventually fires them for going against his vision. Designers, marketers and writers report the same experience: they work endlessly on a project and have it approved, only to be later told it is “s***.”

The complaints of these anonymous sources explain several of the biggest criticisms received by the original Dying Light. Critiques reported the games story was cliched and the gameplay clearly borrowed from its open world predecessors. The anonymous informants have revealed Dying Light’s story was rewritten right before launch at the request of the CEO. The same employees also said that in all the company’s games, no design choices can be implemented unless a game Marchewka likes has already done so. If employees have any issues with the workplace or the CEO, they can go to the company’s HR manager, Marchewka’s wife.

This is not the first time that Techland has faced controversy over its work environment. Back in 2020 the writer for Dying Light 2, Chris Avellone, left the company over sexual assault allegations. Reports said that Avellone used company events and money to put women in a position where he could force himself on them. These allegations, along with the new claims of a toxic work environment, are sure to affect the number of fans wanting to pick up Dying Light 2.

Dying Light super fans are still likely to give the game a chance, as well as those who do not hear of the allegations. With the game still constantly being revised, there is hope that the CEO will take these allegations seriously and implement changes at the company.

Dying Light 2 has no expected release date and will release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
