The creator of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Masahiro Sakurai, is undoubtedly one of the most active game developers on social media. Fans of the Smash Bros. universe often look to his online posts to get updates and hints about any of his current projects. And just recently, Sakurai shared new screenshots that featured the latest DLC fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Pyra and Mythra were revealed to the public during the first Nintendo Direct of 2021. Fans of the Nintendo Switch RPG title, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, are likely aware of who Pyra and Mythra are, and the roles that they play in the Xenoblade Chronicles sequel. However, for the uninitiated SSBU players, and without getting into deep spoilers, Pyra and Mythra are heavily connected to the RPG’s legendary blades. This explains why they wield swords as weapons of choice in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
On Twitter, Sakurai shared several Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshot posts that highlighted how Pyra and Mythra will be rendered in 3D for the fighting game. Some of the photos posted are reminiscent of familiar scenes from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, while others focused on each of the ladies in different poses, a variety of backgrounds, and with other characters.
Sakurai also shared some images of Pyra going head-to-head with the main protagonist of the first Xenoblade Chronicles Shulk, who is a returning fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and is also a sword-wielding character. Fans are likely very interested to see how the move sets of characters from the same game series will interact with each other, whether they are fighting in the same team or against one another.
Another of Sakura’s screenshots also showcased Mythra posing with Rex. Though Rex is Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s main character, Nintendo and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate made the choice to not include him as a fighter in the game. Given his important role in the RPG, fans are likely wondering if Rex will show up in the fighting game as a unit in the SSBU Spirit Board.
The inclusion of Pyra and Mythra in the fighting game probably has fans clamoring to see other Nintendo franchises included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With consistent online events and tournaments, and regular announcements of new DLC characters, it seems pretty likely that Nintendo and SSBU will continue to bring in more content to the game. Fans will just have to wait and see which one of their favorite characters will be next.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is currently available on the Nintendo Switch.
