Releasing back in 2019, Gears 5 has continued to offer a lot of content over the years, including fresh multiplayer characters, missions, and even a Series X update that allowed players to sub Marcus Fenix for Dave Bautista during the campaign. Its latest batch of new content has now been revealed, with The Coalition discussing Operation 6, which comes loaded with a new map and three additional characters.
Alongside the reveal is the announcement that Operations will be changing slightly in the coming months, with The Coalition claiming it will be shortening Gears 5‘s drops from 16 to 11 weeks. Due to popular demand, each operation will also now have a “mid-op drop,” which will add some new content for players to enjoy during each season.
As for Operation 6, it will add several new multiplayer characters, the biggest of which being Colonel Hoffman. As Gear of War fanatics will know, the soldier has long been a big part of the franchise, debuting in the first game and starring in every entry up until Gears of War 4. His appearance in the DLC looks to be based on his days fighting in the Locust War, rather than the older version of Hoffman seen in the more recent games. He’ll be joined by Queen Reyna, who’s become a prevalent part of the current Gears storyline. Formerly the chief of an Outsider village and Kait Diaz‘s mother, Reyna is now part of the Swarm hive and has been overtaken by Queen Myrrah, standing as the series’ current main antagonist.
The third and final new character is the Locust Zealot, which is a form of Locus created by Ukkon’s experiments. It’s a heavily armored variant of the iconic Gears of War foe and one that definitely looks more intimidating than a standard Locust grunt. All three characters will be able to join the fight on a new map, with a fresh battleground known as Speyer coming to the game. It’s said to be a strong locale for players who enjoy long-range firefights, with large, empty plazas and spacious buildings for opponents to clash over. The Coalition claims more Operation 6 news will be on the way later this week.
For those wanting to get into Gears 5, the game is currently free to claim via Xbox Live Gold. Those who haven’t got their copy might want to consider doing so ASAP, however, with the Games with Gold promotion switching over to a new batch of games early next month.
Gears 5 is out now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
