With the success of WandaVision, there is a lot of excitement for the rest of the Disney Plus slate of Marvel Studios’ television projects. The release date for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been known for a while, but the next major release, Loki, had yet to announce a premiere date. Today, Disney Plus and Marvel Studios finally announced the Tom Hiddleston series will start streaming on June 11, 2021.
Loki follows the adventures of the titular character after he escapes with the Tesseract in the alternate 2012 in Avengers: Endgame. The trailer for the Disney Plus series caused a lot of excitement amongst Marvel fans when it revealed that the God of Mischief would be working, voluntarily or not, with the Time Variance Authority. The TVA is an organization in the Marvel comics that is charged with protecting the timeline of the universe. Since this Loki’s escape formed an alternate timeline, it’s no surprise he would come to the attention of the TVA.
Comedic actor Owen Wilson was featured in the Loki trailer, making his first appearance in the MCU as Mobius, a member of the Time Variance Authority. Several other cast members have been announced in undisclosed roles, including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Richard E. Grant, Sophia Di Martino, and Wunmi Mosaku. Not much else is known about the series so far. While Thor and Heimdall are mentioned by Loki in the trailer, just before he leaps out of a plane as what appears to be the MCU version of infamous hijacker D.B. Cooper, there’s no confirmation they will appear in the show.
After the release of Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki will be the third series starring a major existing member of the MCU. These television shows are part of Marvel’s Phase 4, much of which is likely to be exploring the multiverse. Along with the movies in this phase, the Disney Plus shows will be introducing new characters to the MCU, both as supporting characters in shows like Loki and in their own starring roles like Ms. Marvel.
While it has not been confirmed, Loki is likely to be following the same week-by-week release schedule as WandaVision and the upcoming The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. This format has proven to be very successful with WandaVision. It gives fans time to discuss and theorize while also reducing the number of spoilers fans see before watching the show, both of which work in Marvel’s favor.
Loki will start streaming on Disney Plus on June 11, 2021.
