PlayStation Boss Says Bringing Console Exclusives To PC Was An Easy Decision

One would think that Sony’s decision to create a Horizon Zero Dawn PC port was a tough one to make. Until the port’s release, the company had never put a first-party PlayStation title on another gaming system as well as the fact that the majority of PlayStation’s exclusives were best-sellers. Many would argue that these first party exclusives were the main advantage the console has over its competitors. Sony knew this and leveraged it for decades, so many expected a dramatic reason for its shift in strategy.

However, according to PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, there isn’t one; actually, it’s just the opposite. In an interview with news outlet GQ, one that covered a wide range of PlayStation topics, Ryan claimed that Sony‘s decision to give Horizon to the PC was a fairly straightforward one. It knew that it could use the game as a cheap but effective way to market the PlayStation brand. The PC player base is huge, and by allowing it to play Horizon, Sony felt it exposed itself to a ton of potential new PlayStation players.

Ryan’s GQ explanation echoes what he said when Sony first announced Horizon Zero Dawn‘s PC port. He claimed back then too that the company had ported Horizon because it believed its quality would seduce new gamers into playing PlayStation. In a way, the company was still leveraging PlayStation’s greatest asset, just in a different way. It’s one thing to hear about how great PlayStation exclusives are, but it’s another to experience them firsthand. The act also brought in more money for Sony to spend on other PlayStation IPs.

Ryan also explained why Sony decided to pick last year to start porting games over to the PC, and not anytime before that. Interpreting his words, the PlayStation 4 had an exceptional amount of great games, especially near the end of its cycle. These games represent some of the best Sony has to offer in terms of graphics and play. So, in preparation for the PS5’s release, Sony capitalized on the games’ buzz and ported Horizon Zero Dawn to the PC.

So far, Sony’s plan is going well. Horizon‘s PC port met with so much success that the company plans to put a slew of other PlayStation games alongside it, starting with a Days Gone PC port. What other titles it has in store for the gaming system remain a mystery, but it’ll be interesting to see what they are in the long run, same as it will seeing if the plan does end up bringing the game between PC and console players.
