The Grand Theft Auto games have been a critical and commercial darling since the series’ inception in 1997. While the earlier games haven’t aged very well, the PS2 trilogy, Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, definitely have. They may not look the most astonishing now or have an absolutely huge scale, but they still have their charm intact.
Fans of the series did a lot of work in reverse engineering Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City, which would then allow Nintendo Switch users to port these games to their consoles. Recently, however, Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two issued DMCA takedowns, which ordered for shutting down these projects. Such a move would have sent fans into a raging outcry, which has happened to some extent in this case as well, but it seems there could be a blessing in disguise here, as it could point to something bigger coming out,
The recent takedown of these fan-made reverse-engineered projects could point to something related coming up sometime soon. Fans should note that “could” is the keyword here, as publically distributing a reverse-engineered copyrighted source code gives Take-Two the right to issue such an action. As much as fan-speculation suggests otherwise, this could be the very reason for such an action. Big-scale corporate institutions such as Nintendo are known for pulling down fan-remakes its popular games, such as one of the many remakes of Metroid 2 or AM2R.
That being said, the timing here could very well suggest otherwise. Rumors of a PS2 Grand Theft Auto trilogy remastered collection have been running rampant for some time now. Many credible leakers have suggested so in the GTA forums, and a series of other leaks and rumors quickly followed suit, giving more wind to these talks. Rockstar or Take-Two hasn’t issued an official statement on the matter, but there is a multitude of reasons as to why this could point to an official remaster.
Rumors suggest that some official announcement is due soon, which is backed by two pretty strong pieces of evidence. A recent job-listing regarding a trailer appeared online, which probably means one is in the works for something soon. While some believe that it could be Grand Theft Auto 6, the possibility of this happening soon is unlikely. That really only leaves fans with the only option of a reveal trailer for this remaster trilogy, or perhaps something completely different. This also lines up perfectly with an upcoming Take-Two earnings call, which makes it an opportune time for Rockstar Games to make an announcement.
Rockstar previously re-released the Grand Theft Auto games for the PS4 with minimal improvements, so many may worry this is going to be the case. Since it would take significant resources to accomplish a full-fledged remaster or a remake, many think that the new remaster is going to be a similar affair. After all, many of Rockstar’s resources are going towards the development of Grand Theft Auto 5‘s online mode and Grand Theft Auto 6, so it’s very possible for this to turn out this way. That being said, Rockstar is a big company and it could be that this turns out to be a big surprise.
