Mortal Shell Confirms Free Next-Gen Upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Debuting last year, Mortal Shell quickly became one of the more revered games to try and capture FromSoftware‘s notoriously punishing style of gameplay, combining swift combat, a creepy atmosphere, and plenty of powerful bosses to slay. Since its release, the game has welcomed a variety of updates, adding new skins and even a photo mode to enhance the experience.

On March 4, the game will get its biggest enhancement yet, with the experience slated to debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X as Mortal Shell: Enhanced EditionThe new version will bring major visual improvements – including a smoother frame rate, higher resolution, and reworked textures – and will be available as a free upgrade for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players.

As for what will be included, Mortal Shell appears to have been pretty thorough with its upgrade. Visuals will be bumped from HD to 4K, while the game’s textures have been revamped too, boasting higher detail. The game will also be shifting from 30 FPS to a much smoother 60 FPS, except on Xbox Series S, where the frame rate will remain the same. For those wanting a visual cue as to what to expect from the Enhanced Edition, a new trailer showcases some high-octane slices of the game’s combat with the visual upgrades of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions.

Much like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, Mortal Shell takes place in a sinister and cryptic world, with players able to inhabit one of four warriors that offer differing builds, abilities, and weapons for players to employ in battle. Along the way, they’ll upgrade each warrior’s attributes and strengths, battling against tough enemies and gargantuan bosses that they’ll need to analyze to defeat. What sets the game apart from its more prominent influences is the aforementioned ability to switch between builds during the campaign, as well as a regenerating buff that allows players to shield themselves from any blow, giving them the option to play more aggressively.

Mortal Shell joins a long list of games currently upgrading their experiences to be playable on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, including Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2, Marvel’s Avengers, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Little Nightmares 2, and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. With a lot of players currently unable to get their hands on either of Sony or Microsoft’s next-generation platforms, it seems they’ll at least have a large library of exceptional experiences to test out when they finally do.

Mortal Shell is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions arriving on March 4.
