Sony hosts the next PlayStation State of Play on February 25 — today, and according to the announcement detailing the event, it will focus on ten different games for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5. Included among these titles will be new announcements from both third-party and indie developers. As Final Fantasy 7 Remake comes from Square Enix, a third-party developer, it could potentially be one of the titles that the State of Play chooses to dedicate its 30-minute runtime to.
And according to a new rumor, that’s exactly what the event plans to do. Having first appeared on 4Chan before being picked up by the r/GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, the rumor claims that not only will Final Fantasy 7 Remake appear at the State of Play, but Square Enix will use the time to announce a Final Fantasy 7 Remake upgrade. It’ll be a definitive edition that’s available for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 and will supposedly be called Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Ever Crisis.
The rumor claims that Ever Crisis will provide Final Fantasy 7 Remake with a host of new game mechanics for players to enjoy. To start, players will have access to two new chapters in Chapter 8.5, “All Dressed,” and Chapter 19. There will be a new boss battle, a new set of trophies to earn, a photo mode, and something called “Materia Quick Change.” To top it off, the game will come with features exclusive to the PS5, such as a Performance Mode and full DualSense support.
Of course, as with all rumors, this should be taken with a grain of salt. Square Enix trademarked Ever Crisis earlier this year, but the leaker could have just used the name for credibility. The information apparently comes from a press release but said release is nowhere to be found. Also, the date the supposed upgrade will apparently launch is April 10, which is the same day the original FF7 Remake released, but this year, that day is a Saturday, which usually isn’t when developers put out their new titles.
All that said, Final Fantasy 7 Remake upgrade rumors have been in the mill for a while now, and if such a thing were to get announced, a PlayStation State of Play would be a particularly good place to do it. The three-minute time slot would be more than enough for Square Enix to show off what the new remake has in store. The State of Play begins in a few hours, so there’s not much longer to find out if the rumors are true or, at least, this current one anyway.
