Destiny 2 Adding Master Difficulty When Vault of Glass Raid Returns

Bungie announced earlier that the classic Destiny raid, Vault of Glass, will be getting a Master difficulty mode after it is added to Destiny 2 in Season 14. Currently, there is no exact date as to when Vault of Glass will be added to Destiny 2, and it seems possible that the Master difficulty mode may be added after Season 14.

The reveal came from Assistant Game Director for Destiny 2, Joe “Joegoroth” Blackburn in a “Destiny 2021 Update” article published on Bungie’s website earlier today. Blackburn says that the reasoning for the Master mode is that the team at Bungie has been excited by the changes Master and Grandmaster difficulties for Nightfall strikes have made in terms of combat and mechanics. He says: “We’d like all our future raid and dungeon content to offer Master difficulty versions, where players can earn Adept raid and dungeon gear.”

Blackburn also officially confirmed that the Vex-themed raid would be returning to Destiny 2 in Season 14, but players will not be able to play the higher difficulty mode any time soon after it launches. He says, “While we aren’t able to commit to a Season 14 timeframe for Master Vault of Glass, we do want to take the time to develop a sustainable structure that allows us to ship these closer together in future releases.”

Vault of Glass was the very first raid activity in the history of the Destiny franchise, launching in September 2014, a week after Destiny’s launch. It is commonly regarded as one of the best raids in Destiny due to its tricky encounters, inscrutable secrets, and its large array of strong weapons. The addition of Vault of Glass was first announced on June 9, 2020, when Bungie laid out its plans for Destiny 2’s growth with the Beyond Light expansion and the Destiny Content Vault.

Higher difficulty modes for Destiny 2 raids have been a long-requested feature from a lot of the Destiny community, especially since many enjoyed the challenge of the day one Deep Stone Crypt raid compared to its normal mode. It is odd that Destiny 2’s first raid, Leviathan, and its subsequent raid lairs had “Prestige” modes, but this feature never came to Destiny 2’s later raids. Bungie seems to be committing to revitalizing the idea of hardened raids with the promise of rewarding players with adept loot too, which was something sorely missing from the original Prestige raids.

While this seems like a great addition, top-tier loot locked behind some of the most exclusive activities could create some balancing issues. With power caps on Destiny gear being removed, the weapon sandbox may begin to grow out of control again. A Master mode for an old returning raid also sets a precedent that older Destiny 2 raids and dungeons, such as Last Wish and The Shattered Throne, should also get hard modes and adept loot. When the now delayed Witch Queen expansion launches in 2022, some of these raids may end up in the Destiny Content Vault anyway, denying them the chance of ever getting a hard mode.
