Final Fantasy 7 Remake Yuffie Episode Adds New Playable Character

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade was announced during the PlayStation State of Play, updating last year’s critically acclaimed release with upgraded visuals and new content. This includes a brand new episode of content featuring the return of Yuffie Kisaragi, as well as a brand new party member, Sonon Kusakabe.

These two are the fifth and sixth party members available in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, Sonon Kusakabe is the first playable character in this project to not have appeared in the original Final Fantasy 7, being a completely original character altogether.

The trailer gives off brief glimpses of Sonon during gameplay, and he’s looking quite different from the other party members. He wields some sort of large staff, which he uses in tandem with Yuffie to fling her through the air for some agile attacks. One moment in the trailer shows Yuffie jumping off of his weapon to strike down a massive boss, indicating the two should be a powerful duo. His staff seems similar to the spears wielded by Cid Highwind from the original Final Fantasy 7, possibly hinting at how that character will play in future parts.

It isn’t yet known if Sonon can be played individually, or if he can only be commanded by Yuffie during battle. The trailer only shows Yuffie herself as the primary playable character, with Sonon always being shown in a support role. Interestingly, on the UI, his information is shaded teal rather than blue like the rest of the party members. This distinction could be meaningless, or it could suggest he can’t be switched to as the primary fighter at any point.

Furthermore, not much is yet known about Sonon’s character, either. He seems to be a part of Avalanche, but under a different cell than Barret, Tifa, and the rest of the main party. He teams up with Yuffie, who is currently an elite special forces operative for the New Wutai government, to go against the common enemy of Avalanche. Beyond this context, the exact motives and backstory of Sonon are still unknown. However, he and Yuffie do seem to already have a fun dynamic that will likely be explored further in the rest of the episode. This new content is definitely making the PS5 upgrade seem worthwhile.

Intergrade was definitely the highlight of today’s State of Play, giving Final Fantasy 7 fans plenty of new content to look forward to. This new Yuffie episode should be an interesting look at the future of the Remake project, showing how new party members and characters will be integrated. No matter how Sonon’s character turns out, Integrade is shaping up to be a fantastic expansion to an already enjoyable base package.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is coming to PlayStation 5 on June 10th.
