In the ever-fluctuating character tier lists of Genshin Impact, one character has consistently remained at the bottom of the rankings since the game’s launch: Amber. As a result, Amber is the butt of many jokes and much mockery, but her intrepid character design and cheerful nature have also earned her a legion of fans, regardless of her field utility and combat abilities. While her outfit resembles a typical fantasy ranger, its bright red coloring and her bunny-like ribbon give her a signature flair.
The red-clad outrider of the Knights of Favonius, is the first character Travelers meet aside from Paimon when they arrive in Teyvat. Amber is also one of the few completely free characters every Genshin Impact player can claim for their party, regardless of the game’s current banners and promotions.
Even though her combat abilities are quickly outshined by other archers and Pyro Vision wielders, Amber has some useful talents and fun details that make getting acquainted with her worthwhile.
Amber appears to be in her mid-teens, of an age with Travelers, and upon meeting players, she quickly informs them that she is Mondstadt’s greatest outrider… only to admit that she is also Mondstadt’s only Outrider. A subclass of the Knights of Favonius, Outriders are responsible for ranging and scouting the wilderness surrounding the city for threats and oddities. Mobility seems to be key in this task, as Amber is also the three-time winner of the city’s Gliding Championship, and is the one who tests the player’s aptitude for floating around the city. These skills come in handy for the various limited-time glider course events.
In English, Amber is voiced by Kelly Baskins, who also voices Melodia in Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny and Pholia in Shadowverse. Her Japanese voice actress is Manaka Iwami, a prolific seiyuu who has voiced a number of famous anime characters including Tohru Honda of Fruits Basket, and Carmilla in Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World. Amber’s Chinese voice actress uses the alias Milkman, and in Korean, she is portrayed by Kim Yeon-woo with credits in properties including Black Clover, One-Punch Man, Fairy Tail, and Pokemon.
Amber is crucial for solving many early game puzzles in the field that require the player to light torches at range, or within a certain time limit, as holding down her attack button releases a flame imbued arrow. Her elemental ability, Explosive Puppet, summons Baron Bunny, an adorable dancing plushie that vaguely resembles Amber. Baron Bunny will draw the ire of local enemies for a few seconds before violently exploding. The ability has some early utility in situations where players are in danger of being surrounded, and once Amber’s second constellation is unlocked, she can shoot Baron Bunny directly to double the damage of its explosion. Paired with an Electro Vision user, like Lisa, Amber can dish out respectable damage by triggering overcharge reactions.
Her Elemental Burst ability, Fiery Rain, does exactly what the name implies, shooting a hail of burning arrows that deal constant AoE fire damage. Since Amber’s combat abilities don’t require her to stay on the field to maximize their effects, she works best as a sub-DPS party member. And if players manage to max out her constellation, Fiery Rain will also act as a partywide buff that increases characters’ movement speed and attack. When paired with a harder hitting party member who possesses AoE potential, like Xiao, her ultimate can kick off an epic chain of Elemental Bursts.
Even though her stat weight and talents leave a lot to be desired, it also must be said that Amber’s ascension materials (Agnidus Agate, Everflame Seeds, Lamp Grass, and Arrowheads), are fairly easy to come by. Amber’s crucial stats are Crit Rate, Pyro Damage, and Attack % boosts. The two ideal weapons players will likely want to work with are the Skyward Harp or The Stringless. As far as artifacts go, the Noblesse Oblige set synergizes well with her sub-DPS support abilities.
Unless players feel strongly attached to Amber, or have trouble obtaining another Pyro Vision user, it is probably wise to wait on ascending Amber past the first threshold, simply because her stats are the least competitive of any character in the game. Hopefully buffs are headed to the bunny girl soon, but in the meantime, she’s still a charming presence in Traveler’s entourage.
Genshin Impact is available now for Mobile devices, PC, and PS4, with PS5 an Switch versions in development.
