Knockout City, developed by Velan Studios, published by EA, and first introduced last week during Nintendo’s Direct, has received another trailer just a week later during Sony’s State of Play event. While the trailer revealed during Nintendo’s event gave a broad overview of the title, the trailer shown during the State of Play digs a little deeper into some elements shown in the first trailer.
The first trailer for Knockout City showcased general the general idea of the game. It’s an elevated game of dodgeball with characters running around a city environment trying to hit each other. It appeared to essentially be a dodgeball battle royale game in the vein as many that came before it, like Fortnite or Spellbreak.
The trailer shown at the State of Play event explained exactly what type of modes players can expect from the game. The two game modes shown are Face Off and Team KO. In the former, players will be competing by themselves against only one opponent with a constantly shrinking playing field, similar to many battle royale games.
In the second mode, Team KO, players will be joined by two other players to battle another team of three. Here, a mechanic briefly shown in the Nintendo trailer is explained further. Should players not have a ball at their disposal, one of their teammates can instead become the ball, allowing a move in which that teammate is charged up with what is referred to as an ultimate throw, creating a large impact wherever they land, knocking out any opponents in the radius.
The trailer also explains that each map has its own unique elements for players to take into consideration while playing. The map shown in the trailer was Back Alley Brawl, and had two unique features that would change up how the match’s dynamic worked. The first is the presence of tubes similar to something one would find in a Super Mario game, which players can use to traverse the mao quickly . The second is a special type of ball called a sniper ball that, as its name implies, allows players to hit opponents from long distances.
The trailer also explains that the game will be coming out May 21 this year, and players can sign up for a beta on Knockout City’s official site.
Knockout City releases for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One on May 21, 2021, with backward compatibility for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
