It’s hard to believe how much Pokémon has changed over the years. When the franchise first started, there were much less pokémon and regions than there are now. After the success of the Kanto games, Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version were made, introducing players to Johto and 100 new creatures to catch.
Though there were a lot of new places to explore, even more locations were added in the anime. There are many settings in Johto that Ash, Pikachu, and their friends traveled to that players could not. Here are ten places that are in the anime’s version of Johto that weren’t in the video games.
10 Eggseter
In “Extreme Pokémon”, Ash and his friends arrived at Eggseter. There, they had an encounter with Gary, who told them about the race that the episode is named after. Deciding to join the race himself, Ash got help from Mr. Shellby, who worked at a Pokémon Day Care Center. Ash ended up winning the race, with Gary being right behind him. As the two rivals had matured since they first met, Gary accepted Ash’s victory.
9 Mount Quena
In “Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns”, the titular pokémon, along with the other pocket monster clones lived at Mount Quena, hoping to stay away from people. Wanting to take control of Mewtwo, Giovanni sent Team Rocket to find it. Luckily, the trainers got to Mount Quena just in time and were able to help Mewtwo and the cloned pokémon. Throughout their time together, Mewtwo came to realize that all of the cloned pokémon belonged in the world just as much as anyone else. It accepted that being a clone wasn’t really a bad thing, no longer thinking that it had to isolate itself from humanity.
8 Charicific Valley
Charicific Valley appears in the episode, “Charizard’s Burning Ambitions”, and is a place where a group of Charizard live. When Ash and his friends met a woman named Liza and her Charizard, she brought them to the Charicific Valley and showed Ash how weak his was compared to others.
Realizing that his Charizard could get much stronger if it trained there, Ash let it stay, saying goodbye to a beloved pokémon that he had for a long time.
7 Alto Mare
Alto Mare comes from the movie, Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias. In this movie, Ash had a mysterious encounter with Latias, a pokemon that disguised itself as a young girl. The two were attacked by members of Team Rocket but managed to escape. Shortly after, Ash learned that this girl was Latias, and also met Latios. Once he left, Team Rocket captured Latios and Latias searched for Ash, hoping that he could save Latios. However, Alto Mare faced danger towards the end of the film, resulting in Latios sacrificing his life to save his home.
6 Florando
In “Flower Power”, Ash, Misty, and Brock go to a Pokémon Exhibition. There, they met a girl named Bailey and her two Bellossom, who taught them that dancing can help them in battle. This proved to be true when Team Rocket captured the pokémon that performed. By learning how to dance, Pikachu’s fighting skills improved, being able to dodge attacks more easily. Pikachu and the Bellossom defeated Team Rocket’s pokémon and rescued the ones that they kidnapped, saving the Exhibition.
5 Arborville
Arborville is a location that comes from the movie, Pokémon 4Ever – Celebi: Voice of the Forest. When they arrived there, Ash and his friends met a boy named Sam, who had traveled forty years into the future. Sam arrived at this time period after an encounter he had with Celebi. A member of Team Rocket, known as the Iron-Masked Marauder, took control of Celebi, hoping to use it to take Giovanni’s place.
However, with the help of Suicune, who Ash saw at the beginning of the movie, Sam and Ash were able to get Celebi back. At the end of the movie, Celebi took Sam back to his own time period, where he eventually became Professor Oak.
4 Marion Town
Celebi has made an impact on many trainers. The episode, “Celebi and Joy!” focuses on Ritchie rather than Ash and the other main characters. When Ritchie arrived at Marion Town, he saved two Nurse Joys that were being attacked. The older Nurse Joy told Ritchie that Celebi once lived in Marion Town and talked a little bit about a tragedy that happened in her childhood. That night, Celebi sent Ritchie back in time. He quickly realized that he was sent to the time period that the older Nurse Joy had told him about. Knowing what could have happened, Ritchie was able to change the history of Marion Town and make it a better place.
3 Len Town
In “The Psychic Sidekicks!”, the trainers met a girl named Cherry and her Girafarig. Due to the ghost type pokémon that are in Len Town, the people protect themselves by obtaining psychic pokémon. After a friendly battle between Cherry and Ash, she saw how strong of a bond Ash has with Pikachu and introduced the trainers to the other psychic pokémon. When Team Rocket began to capture them, Girafarig and Pikachu saved the psychic pokémon. Cherry was determined to become a trainer just like Ash and believed that she could as her bond with Girafarig became stronger in the battle against Team Rocket.
2 Greenfield
In Pokémon 3: The Movie – Spell of the Unown: Entei, Professor Oak’s friend, Spencer Hale, disappeared. Left without a family his daughter, Molly, came across the Unown who granted her everything she wished for. Knowing that Molly wanted a family, the Unown created an Entei that served as Molly’s father, who also took Ash’s mom to become Molly’s. Throughout the movie, Ash tried to get his mother back. However, this was only successful when Molly was able to accept what happened to her family and let her wishes go. By doing so, Ash’s mom was saved while Spencer and Molly’s mother were able to return to her.
1 Snowtop Mountain
In “Freeze Frame”, Ash and his friends searched for Articuno. For a while, they traveled with Todd, who wanted to take a photograph of the legendary pokémon. Articuno had saved people for over 1,000 years and did so again when it noticed that Ash and his friends almost fell off a cliff. Getting the photo he wanted, Todd decided to stay at Snowtop Mountain and take more photos, while the trainers continued on their journey, meeting other legendary pokémon on the way.
