Planned for a theatrical release this summer, Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will introduce the first Asian superhero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans have been waiting for the official trailer drop, or even a sneak peek into what the latest Marvel hero will look like. While nothing official has been released yet, a picture of a new Marvel LEGO set has leaked and gone viral on social media as it offers fans a first glimpse at Shang-Chi in costume.
The “Battle at the Ancient Village” LEGO set features an image of Simu Liu, the Chinese-Canadian actor best known for his role in the CBC Television sitcom Kim’s Convenience, dressed in a red and black suit, with the character’s logo appearing over the chest, and the suit underneath that section looking like some kind of armor. He also seems to be wearing black pants, but the camera’s flash creates a glare on the box, making it difficult to see any other details. The little LEGO version of Shang-Chi also appears on the box’s cover and is seen wearing the same outfit.
Apart from the titular hero, several characters from Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi are seen on the LEGO set’s cover, including Meng’er Zhang’s Xialing, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung’s Wenwu, and Death Dealer, Shang-Chi’s nemesis from the comics. They seem to be a part of some kind of battle, as is suggested by the name of the set as well. Shang-Chi is seen going up against Wenwu, which is potentially an alias for The Mandarin, an extremely powerful leader and founder of the Ten Rings.
One thing that has particularly caught the attention of MCU fans is the giant dragon, which seems to be spewing blue fire, featured on the cover. It could remind some of the undead dragon in Game of Thrones, which fought alongside the Night King. If this dragon is, in fact, a part of the upcoming Marvel Studios film, it could hint towards The Valley of the Sleeping Dragon from the comics, and the character could be the evil space dragon Fin Fang Foom. Rumors about its inclusion in the movie were circulating last year when set footage from Australia had leaked online.
Fans do need to keep in mind though that LEGO sets don’t always depict actual scenes from the movie. This could just be an artist’s impression or creativity at work and there is no confirmation that the exact scene will appear in the film. Additionally, Foom is depicted as a green dragon in the comics, while the dragon on the LEGO set is red and white. With the movie’s release date not too far away, fans may not have to wait too long to find out if Shang-Chi will go up against a big, bad dragon in the upcoming project.
Filming of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings completed in December 2020, after facing several delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The film is Marvel’s way of pushing for more diversity as it features a largely Asian cast. In addition to Liu, Shang-Chi stars Michelle Yeoh, Ronnie Chieng, and Awkwafina in major roles.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release in theaters on July 9, 2021.
