Bravely Default 2: What Are Collectible Resources for?

Bravely Default 2 may not be long released, but it is already causing waves among those who have bought it. In fact, Bravely Default 2 spirits are planned for Smash Bros Ultimate, and it’s not inconceivable for a character from it to appear there in future if the game proves popular enough.

How popular Bravely Default 2 will actually prove to be is still up in the air however. While there are elements players enjoy, many agree there are also just as many frustrating parts, mainly centered around lack of innovation or new features that add more grind. One new feature that has added some confusion among players are the Collectible Resources, so here’s a quick rundown on what they’re used for.

It’s important to note that with Bravely Default 2 not being a direct sequel, new features are par for the course, and they can have no ties to previous titles. As such, Collectible Resources will feel somewhat alien to players of the older titles in the series. Oftentimes parts of Bravely Default games have purposes that are not clear until later in the game, especially concerning jobs or future story beats. With Collectible Resources however, this is not the case.

The Collectible Resources have a confusing name suggesting many possible purposes, but in truth they seem to have only one. Collectible Resources are for selling and not much else. Despite their diversity and the wide range of monsters dropping them, they exist for no other reason than to sell for cash. In fact, if one checks for them in the Lore menu, they are actually labeled as Sellables, which makes their purpose much more clear. Obviously, this doesn’t necessarily make them worthless, since any player who knows their purpose can sell them easily enough. More money nicely lowers the overall time to beat Bravely Default 2 while making it easier as well.

On the one hand, this makes little sense. Putting in such items instead of just awarding the player extra money just puts in an extra step that players must fulfill for seemingly no reason. With the extensive Job list of Bravely Default 2, it’s possible that more money would create some kind of exploit. These overpowered Job exploits have been known to exist in Bravely Default games before, but if that’s the reason, it’s not clear.

It’s important to remember that Bravely Default 2 is still very newly released. While it is possible these Resources have another use, players likely shouldn’t hold their breath. With this information, players are recommended to play a few games before Bravely Default 2 and then read up a bit to see if the game is for them.

Bravely Default 2 is out now as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.
