Fans Shouldn’t Expect Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League News for Quite Some Time

The Batman: Arkham franchise is one of the ongoing strongholds of superhero games. For years, this interpretation of Batman has found a lot of success telling new stories with the Caped Crusader and his many rivals. A new game was announced for the Batman: Arkham universe last year, but it’s not the game that fans might have expected. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is set in the same continuity as these Batman games. It sounds like a very different type of game, both in gameplay and tone. The antiheroes at the center of this game offer lots of fun storytelling opportunities that ought to offer a good contrast to the setting’s usual fare.

However, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is probably not going to be discussed at length for a while yet. That’s because it has something crucial in common with a long list of other games. Just like Elden Ring, Fable, The Elder Scrolls 6, and so many more, Kill the Justice League was announced long before it’s release. It won’t be out until 2022. Since it was announced about two years before its release date, odds are that Rocksteady Studios doesn’t have much to share right now. Instead, fans will have to be patient.

Information about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is very scarce right now. A full six months have passed since the game was announced at DC FanDome, and Rocksteady still hasn’t had anything significant to reveal about the game. Because of that silence, it’s clear that the game is still deep in development. Rocksteady is probably just focusing on getting the game together and doesn’t want to put resources towards another trailer or a gameplay teaser right now. That’s probably the right thing to do in the long run. Focusing on getting the game right is what’ll ultimately help Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League the most.

Still, Kill the Justice League is another case of an odd trend that’s permeating the game industry. So many studios are deciding to announce new games way before they’re ready to share any additional information about them. Fans are waiting for updates on everything from Avowed to Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. It’s hard to say just what is causing developers to make this call. Maybe it’s done in order to drum up hype in advance, or maybe it’s done as a gesture of transparency. Whatever the motivation, dropping a trailer and following it up with many months of silence leaves fans with more questions than answers.

As with all these other games, fans will just have to take it on faith that no news is good news. Since fans have no reason to believe that Rocksteady is struggling with Kill the Justice League, odds are that the game is doing fine and the developers just want to keep their heads down. The game won’t be out for another year, so there’s definitely a lot of work left to be done. Maybe by late summer or sometime in fall, Rocksteady will have gotten far enough to give fans a better picture of Kill the Justice League. Until then, though, there probably won’t be any updates.

At least fans have a different DC title to look forward to before then. Gotham Knights releases on July 31st, offering a very similar four-character superhero experience, but through the lens of Gotham and the Bat-Family. It sounds like it has a very similar core structure to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but definitely with different themes. It should be enough to whet the appetite for fans everywhere and tide them over until 2022. Hopefully both these new ventures into DC superhero canon turn out to be worth the wait.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League releases in 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
