Fans of the Monster Hunter video games waited anxiously for the new movie adaptation now in cinemas that based on the trailer looks more like a military rescue mission with CGI. The director, Paul W.S. Anderson is known for his video game adaptations that sadly, usually fall short. He started with the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie and is also known for creating the Resident Evil movies from 2002 to 2016. Hoping that this movie will be more loyal to the beloved game franchise, the Monster Hunter movie was released on December 18, 2020. It takes place in a desert in the “New World”, where a hunter trained to kill the monsters living there is separated from his group after their ship is attacked. Meanwhile, a storm pulls a team of soldiers through a portal into the New World. Here our protagonists, the Hunter and Natalie Artemis (played by the director’s wife, Milla Jovovich) meet, and the plot thickens.
Avoiding spoilers, we’ll share the details about the monsters that appear in the movie. Worried fans will not be any happier when realizing that the movie only features five or six monsters, in contrast with the couple hundred that appear in the games. Surely one movie couldn’t carry the weight of hundreds of monsters, but a few more would’ve been nice.
6 Apceros
Apceros are tortoise-like herbivores introduced in the very first Monster Hunter game, appearing in every game since, making them a staple in the Monster Hunter universe. Needless to say, these peaceful creatures can’t cause any challenges for our protagonists. Except when talking about a stampede, which – according to Murphy’s Law – will happen at some point. Regardless, their appearance would be missed by fans if creators were to leave them out.
These gentle giants are on top of our list as sadly the worst monsters in the movie. Based on only their lack of aggressive nature, not their ability to stampede right into our hearts.
5 Nerscyllas
The Nerscylla is an arachnoid monster first introduced in Monster Hunter 4, and haunting the nightmares of many ever since. They look and act like a gigantic spider, moving incredibly fast forwards, as well as sideways. They also have the ability to produce silk and have stingers. The only difference between this monster and a real-life spider is the fact that the Nerscyllas has only six legs. And if they weren’t scary enough in the games, now we have our CGI version to enjoy.
Lurking in dark caves and only emerging at night to look for food, the characters in the movie first meet this monster when night falls and their group is being attacked. After this deadly attack, the protagonists later hunt this monster for its venom to defeat the Black Diablos. Being second-to-last on our list is not a criticism of the frightening nature of this beast, but rather an admiration of the upcoming contenders.
4 Black Diablos
In the game, Black Diablos are one of the most aggressive creatures, a notorious enemy in the franchise. According to the games, the Black Diablos are actually female Diablos in heat. This explains their aggressiveness and increased hostility. In the movie, this is the first monster the characters encounter.
After the first glance, or judging by the teasers only, fans will be able to see the intricate details that went into this monster. The creators of the movie went to great lengths trying to make it an accurate representation of the game’s Diablos. Adding a roar and other physical features like its claws that are faithful to the games. Rounding up to the top three (out of five, but still exciting), the Black Diablos is a feminine icon in the movie, and the games too. This ferocious monster is a beloved beast in the game, and based on the detail-oriented CGI, she will be a beloved beast in the movie as well.
3 Gore Magala
We don’t know much about this monster. The Gore Magala was first introduced in Monster Hunter 4, with traits similar to the Elder Dragons. They have four limbs, a clawed pair of wings, their appearance resembles a unique wyvern. Avoiding any spoilers, this behemoth appears at the end of the movie, serving us the cherry on top of the cake. And let’s just say, that the events taking part after this special appearance could potentially set up the sequel for the movie, whether we want it or not.
Fans love a mysterious and epic Elder Dragon, especially if they’re responsible for the cliff-hanger.
2 Rathalos
The Rathalos is considered one of the most remembered and epic monsters of the games. This monster too has appeared in every game since the first one, making it a veteran of the franchise. But as soon as fans see the first appearance of this monster in the movie, they’ll notice that this beast is far too big to be a normal Rathalos. Enter the ‘Greater Rathalos’. The concrete reasons behind the enlargement of this monster are unknown. But it certainly makes a good spectacle – possibly the number one reason behind the decision.
Avoiding any disappointment, the Rathalos (or Greater Rathalos) takes this list by storm. Not only is this monster the ‘mascot’ of the game franchise, but creators made a Greater version, serving the most epic battles in the movie. Based on the activeness in the plot and the pure badassery of the monster, the Rathalos takes first prize no questions asked.
1 Meowscular Chef
The creators found a way to include crowd-favorite character, Meowscular Chef. The appearance of this human-like feline can either be adored by fans or the opposite. The Chef himself is a beloved character in the games, somewhat let down by the movie. For those who are curious, the official Chinese commercial for the movie includes this character, so everyone can finally see what he will look like. Although not technically a monster, he is not exactly human either, therefore making the cut into this list.
