A Titanfall 2 player has revealed an insane method for utilizing the grapple hook mechanic. A Reddit user posted a video showing off a grapple hook strategy that got them banned in Titanfall 2’s competitive Capture the Flag modes.
The first-person shooter by Respawn Entertainment combines fast-paced movement with hulking mech suits. Despite not reaching the heights of competitor FPS series like Call of Duty or Battlefield, the title has a dedicated community of fans. In addition to blowing enemies up with Titans, part of the game’s appeal is the freedom of movement. However, one player has now taken that to the extreme.
Redditor DistractedSeriv put up a short video showcasing how to abuse Titanfall 2’s grapple hook mechanic to win in Capture the Flag. Essentially, the player uses the inertia provided by the grapple hook to fling outside the boundaries of the map. Even though this launches a timer to encourage getting back inside, it is no match for the high speed of the game. The Redditor dashes around the back of the map before using the grapple hook to fly back inside, right on top of the enemy flag. This flank allows DistractedSeriv to immediately grab the flag and continue moving quickly along walls back to home base.
The video is only about a minute long, but shows multiple areas where this trick is possible. In every example, the Redditor activates the grapple hook to get outside the map and get behind enemy lines safely. While it looks easy enough, DistractedSeriv explains that perfecting this strategy is anything but simple. It was not until after playing Titanfall 2 for years before the user even began to think about trying this. After that, it took hours of practice in private lobbies to get the routes down this smoothly. While the grapple hook is key to performing this trick, understanding basic movement and traversal is also necessary if hoping to complete it successfully.
With over 5 years since launch, it is interesting to see players learning more about the positively reviewed Titanfall 2. While this exploit got the grapple hook banned, it is a testament to the wild movement of the game. Regardless of going out of bounds, DistractedSeriv shows knowledge of map traversal that makes modern shooters look sluggish.
Though it is a little frustrating to learn that the grapple hook got a ban from competitive Capture the Flag. It seems like if anything, depending on this trick could result in a player ban instead. Now that the mechanic is out for good, a major part of the game’s traversal is gone. In any case, fans of the game will want to check out this trick they did not know they could do in Titanfall 2.
