10 Weirdest Encounters In The Red Dead Redemption Series

The American West could often be a weird place. Rockstar Games are masters at capturing that weirdness almost perfectly. The Red Dead Redemption series has two massive open-world titles under its belt. As such, the protagonists experience a wide array of events ranging from the mundane to the very strange.

Players may be surprised at what they come across while traveling the American frontier. John Marston and Arthur Morgan are, on the whole, rather down-to-earth individuals. The same cannot be said of all the people they meet throughout their adventures. These are some of the more unusual encounters the player may stumble upon while exploring the Wild West.

10 A Drink With The Aberdeen Siblings

Talking to strangers can often be a dangerous endeavor, even for a character in a video game. In the Lemoyne region, just north of Pleasance, lies the Aberdeen Pig Farm. The residents there, Bray and Tammy Aberdeen, are siblings who are a little too “friendly” with each other. They will nonchalantly flirt with each other if Arthur decides to enter the house.

They will very politely offer the player a seat at their dinner table. If Arthur accepts all three shots of the siblings’ mystery alcohol he will eventually pass out. The two weirdos will then rob Arthur of all his money and dump him in a mass grave. One of the corpses is Bray and Tammy’s mother, implying that they also committed matricide.

9 The Cannibal In The Hills

While passing through Armadillo in Red Dead Redemption the player may come across a weeping woman. She will implore John to search for her son who went missing in the nearby hills. An investigation of the area yields a small crime scene: blood, bones, and a shoe. A similar series of events will play out two more times with family members asking John to search for their loved ones.

On the third occasion the player will meet Randall Forrester, seemingly the victim of an assault. It turns out, however, that Randall is a cannibal and had been eating the folks that had gone missing. Randall finds nothing wrong with this lifestyle and will ask John to allow him to attend to his next meal. The choice is left to the player concerning the lunatic’s fate.

8 A Ghostly Tale Of Woe

Besides the shocking amount of strange individuals the player can meet in Red Dead Redemption 2, there’s also a supernatural aspect to certain random encounters. When in the vicinity of Bluewater Marsh between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM, a ghostly apparition can be encountered. Unlike the ghost in Grand Theft Auto V this one is actually quite talkative.

The specter is Agnes Dowd and throughout sixteen encounters she will impart her tragic story to the player. She’s a pretty creepy sight to behold amidst the darkness and fog. Getting too close to her will make Agnes disappear. If every one of her conversations is witnessed she will show the player the tree where she hung herself.

7 A Man & His Horse

When visiting Rathskeller Fork the player can be flagged down by Jeb Blankenship. The man is worried about the love of his life, who has recently been kidnapped by a gang of criminals. John can ride to Tumbleweed to rescue her, but will only find a horse.

Jeb’s “love” is actually his horse, Lucy. John is justifiably upset risking his life for a horse, but the odd stable-hand pays him no mind. Later, in a newspaper article, the player learns that Jeb subsequently married Lucy. It goes on to say that the ceremony was attended by no one.

6 Sonny’s Shack Of Horror

Similar to the Aberdeen Farm, this is yet another location that should probably be avoided. Approaching the shack will initiate dialogue with Sonny, who is sitting on his porch. He’s seemingly a friendly sort, inviting the player into his home for some food. Then, things take a pretty strange turn.

Sonny will knock out the player with a blow to the head. Semi-conscious, Arthur wakes up later and is creepily told by Sonny that he “put up a good fight.” It’s implied that something very disturbing took place while Arthur was out cold. Arthur is deposited a short distance from the shack and can return to exact some revenge.

5 A Close Encounter From Beyond

Cannibals and incestuous siblings aren’t the only strange encounters that Arthur can experience. Atop the Heartland Overflow Reservoir is an abandoned cabin that holds a dark secret. Players are met with a pretty gruesome scene as numerous skeletons litter the interior. It appears that some sort of mass ritualistic suicide had taken place many years ago.

A cryptic note can be found on one of the corpses. It gives instructions that, if followed exactly, will lead to an extraterrestrial encounter. When the moon is in the correct position and Arthur returns to the cabin, the lights of a UFO can be seen hovering overhead. It’s arguably the weirdest, most out-of-this-world scene in the game. Literally.

4 The Man & The Severed Head

The world has undoubtedly seen better days in Undead Nightmare. Zombie hordes are in the process of tearing apart the Wild West, piece by piece. Certain individuals yet untouched by the plague have managed to lose their humanity in other ways. One particularly strange episode can occur near a roadside campsite.

A man, sitting by his fire, will beckon John over to him. If John accepts the invitation the man will start talking to the severed head of his wife. He will chat with it for a time as if nothing was wrong. Eventually, he’ll start to take bites out of it too. The Apocalypse is never a pretty thing, after all.

3 Arthur & The Circus Performers

Visiting the Van Horn Trading Post in Red Dead Redemption 2 can potentially start “The Smell of the Grease Paint” mission. It’s a rather odd one, but also quite humorous. Arthur will be asked by a member of a sideshow act to locate a wayward member of their troupe.

The man in question is Magnifico, a dwarf magician who refuses to come quietly. Finding him results in a chase where Magnifico periodically disappears into a cloud of colorful smoke. Arthur needs to stay on his tail for the duration in order to finally capture him. It all serves as an unexpected interlude in the otherwise grim narrative.

2 The Missing Groom

Outside Coot’s Chapel John may come across an elderly woman named Alma Horlick. She’s distraught that her fiancee Peter is late for their wedding. John agrees to find the missing groom in the town of Armadillo. The story takes a rather strange turn of events when the truth finally comes to light.

The locals will direct John to Odd Fellow’s Rest, a small cemetery outside of town. There, Peter’s grave is discovered. His gravestone reads that he died from a blow to the head almost twenty years prior. Speaking to Alma again reveals that the old woman has, in fact, lost her mind and is unaware of Peter’s death.

1 The Vampire Of Saint Denis

The player needs to do a little digging before witnessing this frightening encounter. Excerpts of some very odd writing can be found in certain locations around Saint Denis. Locating all five of the fragments will bestow a final clue as to the whereabouts of a serial killer stalking the city.

The culprit is not a typical murderer. He’s actually a vampire and bears a striking resemblance to the character seen in the film Nosferatu. Arthur can catch the fiend in the act of draining a man’s blood. The vampire is extremely dangerous, but if he can be killed, will drop an exceedingly unique dagger. Finding an actual vampire in a historical drama is definitely something out of the ordinary, to be sure.
