‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Clip Shows Epic First Battle Between The Titans

Recently, Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard released new footage from the film during the IGN Fan Fest. The 40-second teaser offers fans a sneak peek of the first meeting between the two monsters, and it isn’t the most social meeting. But, what the teaser doesn’t give away is the true depth of destruction caused during the epic battle, which has been confirmed as an 18-minute long scene

The length of the scene was confirmed by Godzilla vs. Kong composer Junkie XL, who also scored Zack Snyder’s Justice League, in an interview with TheFilmJunkee. Referring to the scene as “ridiculous,” the composer did not want to give away any spoilers or let fans know how the battle ends. However, Wingard has confirmed that his movie will end with a definitive winner, which means that one of the two monsters, Kong or Godzilla, will fall.

The teaser begins with a shot of Godzilla swimming through the ocean when he is attacked by jet fighters. This doesn’t go down well with the mega kaiju and he in turn destroys the jet, and some navy battleships as well, with his tail. One of the ships gets dragged underwater when Godzilla swims away, with its anchor getting caught in the monster’s tail. The focus then shifts to Kong, who seems to be chained up on a different ship. He manages to pull the destroyed naval ship back while letting loose a massive roar in his competitor’s direction. This probably marks the beginning of the battle between Godzilla and Kong that fans are waiting to watch.

Scenes from this battle were also visible in the first official trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong. While Kong is chained in the latest teaser, he and Godzilla are both seen fighting on the same aircraft carrier in the trailer. But, if the entire scene is 18 minutes in length, it could bring in a lot more destruction at the hands of the legendary monsters, while also making it one of the longest CGI monster battles.

The movie marks almost six decades since the two giants last shared screen space. King Kong vs. Godzilla, a Japanese film, was released in 1962 and while it ended with Kong as the sole survivor of the conflict between the two, there was a lot of speculation among fans that Godzilla had in fact survived as well. After almost 60 years, Kong and Godzilla are getting a rematch and this time, the ending will not leave any room for speculation.

Godzilla vs. Kong is the fourth film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse and is set five years after the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It works as a sequel for both the Godzilla film and 2017’s Kong Skull Island. With the films getting a crossover, the human characters are also being brought back. Godzilla vs Kong will see Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Rebecca Hall appear, with Chandler and Brown having previously starred in King of the Monsters.

Godzilla vs. Kong comes to HBO Max in the US on March 31, 2021, and in select theaters in Europe starting March 24th.
