Fans of the tunes in SUDA51’s hack-and-slash hit No More Heroes can rejoice once again, as the newest update to the Nintendo Switch port of the game restores some of the music that had been lost to the void. However, a certain fan-favorite J-pop number remains notably absent from the Switch soundtrack.
The news will come as a great relief to fans of the game, many of whom have been attempting to sate their hunger for No More Heroes content with the Switch ports of the first two games before the highly-anticipated third entry in the series arrives in August. A lot of players found it disappointing that the track ‘K-ENT’, which plays when visiting the corrupt ad agency K-Entertainment in the first game, was missing from the Switch version, but it seems the latest patch has restored the tune to its rightful place.
It’s not all sunshine, though: fan favorite song ‘Heavenly Star’, performed by virtual J-pop band Genki Rockets, is still missing from the No More Heroes soundtrack, allegedly due to licensing issues. Indeed, it seems the reason that ‘K-ENT’ was mistakenly removed in the first place was due to the over-enthusiastic eradication of any traces of ‘Heavenly Star’ from the code.
According to chat logs between Engine Software co-founder Ruud Van de Moosdijk and a fellow staffer, the issue was flagged up a few months ago and publishers Marvelous Entertainment were approached about the possibility of a patch. This all now seems to have come to fruition, but regrettably ‘Heavenly Star’ remains off the table unless playing the original Wii version.
All is not necessarily lost though. With last year’s news that the first two No More Heroes titles may be making their way to PC, the possibility remains that some enterprising modder might find a way to patch in the lost track.
In the meantime, though, fans will have to sit tight. If the missing music from the first two games is too much to bear, there’s always a worthwhile career in picking apart No More Heroes 3 trailers for secret tidbits of information and lore to keep idle hands busy.
