Polish development studio and publishing company Forever Entertainment, the company behind the remake of Panzer Dragoon as well as the upcoming remake of Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei, has signed a deal with Square Enix to create “several remakes” under one brand of games.
Square Enix has been around for quite some time now and owns numerous franchises outside of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Having started making games as early as the 1980s before Square and Enix merged into one massive company, many older franchises are trapped on obsolete consoles. But Square Enix has been actively remaking its retro titles in more recent years, such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the upcoming remaster of Legend of Mana. So it’s not surprising to see the Japanese gaming giant sign a deal with a company that specializes in remakes.
However, it’s currently unclear what “brand” Forever Entertainment will be remaking following the deal with Square Enix. There are several IPs that could be possibly up for a remake, and fans are quick to call for their favorite classics to be remade on Twitter, such as one user hoping that Parasite Eve will see a remake in the future. However, there are a few notes to keep in mind when speculating on which series will be remade.
Firstly, Forever Entertainment, while it was commended for its remake of Panzer Dragoon, is a small company and likely isn’t big enough to handle Square Enix‘s flagship series like Final Fantasy, though it’s not out of the question and this doesn’t necessarily disregard spinoffs.
So while Chrono Trigger and the rest of the Chrono series could certainly be eligible for remakes, it doesn’t seem likely that Square Enix would outsource a smaller company for that task over utilizing its own subsidiaries as well as give Forever Entertainment 50% of the profit “across all platforms,” according to the business report from PAP Business.
Also, the wording of the report indicates that Forever will handle “several” remakes under the same “brand,” implying that these remakes will all be under the same series or franchise, though this information has yet to be confirmed by Square Enix. So Parasite Eve could potentially be a candidate for remakes with 3 entries in its series.
Other fans have their money on the SaGa series, a Final Fantasy spinoff series, Ogre Battle, Star Ocean, and Drakengard. With the surge in popularity from the Nier series including Nier: Automata, spinoff games of the Drakengard series, it’s certainly a possibility, though this series isn’t as old as other Square Enix franchises and may be too recent to qualify for full remakes.
