Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot fans wait patiently for news about DLC 3, but Bandai Namco is keeping things locked down tight on that regard. For this reason, when fans discovered a new Kakarot screenshot presumably showing the first glimpse of DLC 3, they were filled with excitement. Unfortunately, unlike previous leaks, this one doesn’t make it obvious one way or another what the next DLC will be about, leaving many to speculate based on what little information there is. One prominent theory is that DLC 3 will adapt Dragon Ball Super‘s Tournament of Power, and that this screenshot is Kakarot‘s take on the team of ten meant to compete in it.
For those that haven’t kept up with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot‘s DLC release schedule, the best way to summarize it is that there isn’t a schedule. Since the game released back in January of 2020, only two major DLC packs have been released and at seemingly random intervals. With news about the next adventure players will embark on as scarce as ever, fans have turned inward to look for hints and craft their own theories. The first DLC covered the Battle of Gods movie and introduced Super Saiyan God, while the second brought back the evil emperor Frieza in his Golden form and let fans access Super Saiyan Blue, so what could be next?
The latest news that that players have comes directly from the the official Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour website, an upcoming event that will be attended by several Dragon Ball game producers. There’s nothing on the website or its time table that indicates Kakarot will make an appearance on the show, but towards the bottom of the page there are two screenshots that are inarguably from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The first shows Goku on his Flying Nimbus in front of his house, but doesn’t give much information past that.
The second screenshot is really interesting, as it shows ten characters all flying together in the Southeast Mountains area, a shot that has never happened within the game so far. What’s more, many of these characters are wearing outfits that don’t make sense, such as Gohan in his early Buu-saga outfit. This could indicate that outfit changes are coming with DLC 3, but the fact that there are ten characters leads others to believe that this is Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot‘s Tournament of Power team.
The final arc of the Dragon Ball Super anime is the Tournament of Power, a massive, 80 fighter battle royale that pits the strongest warriors from eight different universes against each other. Each universe must gather together a team of ten of their mightiest warriors, and when all the warriors from a universe are eliminated, that universe gets erased from existence entirely. This epic battle lasts only 48 minutes, but its events take place over the course of 54 episodes and act as the finale to the anime.
In the anime, Goku is tasked with gathering ten warriors to fight alongside him as the representative of Universe 7, and his choices are interesting. Aside from the obvious answers like himself, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo, Goku is forced to dig deeper into the Z Fighters roster to find more fighters. This sees him recruit Krillin, Tien, and Android 18. With two slots left, Android 17 makes a surprise return and shows that he’s gained a lot of power, and the final slot is filled by none other than a resurrected Freiza. Predictably, this team ultimately is able to win the Tournament of Power, albeit just barely, and their universe remains intact.
Since this screenshot also shows ten fighters flying together, it’s entirely possible that this is a different team for the Tournament of Power. Like the manga, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has made slight changes to the story of Dragon Ball Super in order to make it fit better into its own narrative, so this could be an example of that. Between the two teams, Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, and Tien appear on both, but the other four fighters are different this time. This team has Goten, Trunks (Kid), Yamcha, and Chiaotzu.
Admittedly, many found it strange that Goten and Trunks weren’t included in the original Tournament of Power team, as their ability to go Super Saiyan and utilize fusion makes them much more powerful than the likes of Krillin or Tien. In Dragon Ball Super, the fact that Yamcha wasn’t on the Tournament of Power team was made into a joke, as the character is traditionally considered very weak. Finally, Chiaotzu is easily the strangest choice, as he hasn’t participated in any major fights since Saiyan saga. Even so, it would make sense for Bandai Namco to want to use existing characters rather than add Frieza and Android 17 to the mix.
One other possibility is that this is a Tournament of Power team, but not necessarily THE team. It’s possible that players will be able to choose their own set of ten fighters from the list of playable characters, something that could explain why Future Trunks and Android 18 are the only characters missing from the screenshot. In this case, it could be that players can choose to bring four playable characters and six support characters, or Future Trunks may not be available because of story reasons.
If this does end up being how Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot adapts the Tournament of Power, fans will likely relish in the chance to build their own teams. Unforutnately, due to the relatively small cast of characters in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, there aren’t too many choices to be made, but it is still an interesting concept to play around with. This could also mean that Goku will unlock Ultra Instinct in the next DLC, something that many fans have been hoping for since Dragon Ball Super content was announced.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
