With a Call of Duty game being released every single year, yet still managing to sell incredibly well, it is unlikely that this trend will be stopping anytime soon. As such, 2021’s entry is already in development, and while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is only a third of the way through its life cycle, players already know a fair bit about the upcoming release. With reputable leakers like Tom Henderson providing several tidbits of information over the past few weeks, players should be able to picture what this year’s game could look like.
Call of Duty 2021 has seen its developer leaked as well as its tone and gameplay style. Fans have also been given hints at several potential settings via different sources, and while it is unclear which is true, knowing when and where the game could be set should be useful to fans. According to several different sources, Call of Duty 2021 is going to be developed by Sledgehammer Games. The studio got its start with the Call of Duty series by a assisting with the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and not long after Sledgehammer was given the chance to make its own Call of Duty game. 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the result, with the game introducing exos to players — a divisive gameplay mechanic that was used in 2015 and 2016’s Call of Duty entries as well. Supply drops also made their debut in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, giving the game an interesting legacy.
Sledgehammer returned for 2017’s Call of Duty: WW2, another divisive Call of Duty game due to its limited 6v6 map pool as well as the odd Divisions system. Still, the game did some interesting things with its Call of Duty Zombies mode, and Sledghammer’s Headquarters system was an interesting experiment to say the least. Since WW2, Sledgehammer has seen its founders and Dead Space visionaries Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey move on to new projects, with the rest of the studio assisting with Call of Duty: Warzone in the meantime. Despite these departures, though, it sounds like Sledgehammer Games is preparing to put its spin on Call of Duty once again.
Thus far, Call of Duty 2021 has had several potential settings rumored, with one coming from well-known Call of Duty leaker Tom Henderson. Proven right on a few separate occasions, Henderson has built up a solid reputation with Call of Duty fans, and many look to his social media accounts for early information on the franchise. According to Henderson, the next Call of Duty game will either be set in the future or go by the name “Guerrilla Warfare.” Henderson seems to push the idea of Guerrilla Warfare more heavily in his post, suggesting that players could be playing as civilians in a rebellion.
Another leaker named @Victor___Z suggests that Sledgehammer will returning to the second World War, likely looking at more battles in the Western Front this time around. While it is unclear if the Call of Duty community would like to go back to World War 2 yet again, this does seem like a safer option than another futuristic game or the untapped territory of Guerrilla Warfare. With the original Call of Duty games and 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War joining WW2, there has been no shortage of entries focused on the global conflict.
However, one last potential setting has been thrown into the mix, with the leakers @Okami13_ and @ModernWarzone suggesting that Sledgehammer will be taking players to the Korean War later this year. A completely untapped setting that has not yet been depicted in any of the other Call of Duty games, it would certainly be interesting to see how this war is handled by the developer — as it could he historically accurate or exaggerated to feel more action-packed. Regardless, players can expect to see some of the most important battles from the Korean War if this rumor proves true. With 1950s-era weaponry being diverse enough to work for a Call of Duty game, this rumored time period seems just as valid as Guerrilla Warfare or a World War 2 return.
While Tom Henderson has pushed the idea that the next Call of Duty game will have Sledgehammer Games as its developer and a Guerrilla Warfare setting, he has also discussed some of the game’s core features. According to Henderson, Call of Duty 2021 will be boots on the ground — something that adds to the weight of the rumors regarding a historical, real world war. Likely to be music to the ears of many longtime fans, players can expect to be fighting like human beings instead of futuristic soldiers later this year.
Something else specified by Henderson is that the game will be “gritty and controversial” like 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot. As such, players can expect some mature moments in the next campaign, with blood and gore all-but-guaranteed. The final detail specified about the next Call of Duty game’s content is that it will be integrated with Call of Duty: Warzone. Adding even more weapons to choose from, as well as a greater selection of Operators, the popular free-to-play game will likely have even more content for players to enjoy.
Speaking of Call of Duty: Warzone, Henderson recently claimed that Call of Duty 2021’s reveal would take place inside the battle royale game. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s reveal considered a success, as players flocked to the game to meet Frank Woods and watch the reveal trailer, it is not too surprising that Activision would like to see a similar response later this year. As of now, it is unclear if the reveal will be as involved as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s was, as that game saw players solving puzzles for several weeks inside and outside of the game.
Lastly, Henderson suggests that the reveal will take place in August, following in the latest Black Ops game’s path by happening much later than usual. A smart move that allows players to fully enjoy all the seasons of the current game, this decision makes sense from a business standpoint. Further, it helps fans as well, with players able to ride the hype directly to the game’s launch — with an Alpha, Beta, and trailers all dropping consistently in the lead-up to release.
While all these bits of information are rumors and leaks, meaning that they should be taken with a massive grain of salt, it will be interesting to find out which prove true. Fans should not have to wait too long for answers, though, as with each day that goes by, the release of Call of Duty 2021 comes closer and closer.
