The 10 Rarest Enemies in Dark Souls | Game Rant

There was a time when gamers were tired of the AAA market releasing wave after wave of uninspired titles that constantly held the hand of players at every step of the way and never allowed them to figure out the game’s mechanics themselves. Thankfully, there was one person who understood the problems that modern gamers were facing, and decided to rectify them by releasing perhaps one of the most important titles ever released in gaming history. The man was Hidetaka Miyazaki, and the game was Dark Souls.

At this point, one has already heard everything there is to hear about the brilliance of Dark Souls. Enemy variety is something that people praise across the board in this title, but there are a number of enemies that only appear a limited number of times in the game — enemies that some players might not have even faced in their respective playthroughs. Keeping this in mind, here are ten of the rarest enemies in Dark Souls.

10 Chained Prisoner

An enemy so rare that he only appears only once — in the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, no less — the Chained Prisoner is no slouch and will completely decimate any player who’s ill-prepared to take on such a fearsome foe.

He guards the entrance to the Chasm of the Abyss, making the act of facing him pretty much mandatory if the player wishes to complete the entire Artorias of the Abyss DLC.

9 Golden Crystal Golem

The Crystal Golems are some of the more uninspired enemies in the game, making for nothing more than an extended battle that can get somewhat boring at times after players nail the pattern of this enemy’s attacks.

The Golden Crystal Golems are similar to their blue counterparts, albeit with higher HP and defense. In fact, their magic defense is some of the highest in the entire game, so players need to be patient with their melee attacks to defeat this enemy without incurring too much damage.

8 Havel The Rock

The fact that there’s only one enemy in the game with the Havel Armor Set should make it clear as to how valuable this set really is, and how tough the person wearing it really is.

Havel The Rock is easily one of the hardest encounters in the game, with a single swing of his weapon one-shotting most players who end up encountering this fearsome foe early on in their playthrough. However, this fight is more than worth it just so that players can get the Havel Armor Set, which is easily one of the best heavy armor sets in the entire game.

7 Hydra

The Hydra might seem like an extremely powerful and fearsome foe, but the fact of the matter is that this enemy is extremely easy if players end up engaging it in combat. With a fair bit of blocking and some measured swings, the Hydra will be history sooner rather than later.

There are two versions of this enemy, and neither of them respawns after being bested. The first Hydra is an enemy most players would definitely encounter at the end of Darkroot Basin, while the second variant — a black Hydra with higher HP than its counterpart — is situated in Ash Lake and will torment the player to no end unless they manage to defeat the beast.

6 Banshee

The New Londo Ruins is full to the brim with ghostly enemies that will annoy the player to no end unless they manage to either use cursed items to attack enemies or get cursed themselves.

The Banshee is one such enemy in this area who ends up being more of an auditory nuisance than anything else. In fact, this enemy ends up spending so much time screaming that players would ideally just kill her during her wailing itself.

5 Phalanx

The Painted World of Ariamis is easily one of the best areas in Dark Souls, featuring a bunch of unique enemies coupled with a boss fight that is certainly a spectacle.

One such enemy that is unique to this area itself is the Phalanx — a group of defensive spear-wielders who can be quite annoying to fight. Thankfully, it’s clear that the design of the enemy is inspired by the boss of the same name in Demon’s Souls, so players need only just skirt around this enemy and slowly take down the thirteen enemies in this formation one-by-one.

4 Basilisk

The Basilisk might not be one of the imposing-looking enemies in the game by any stretch of the imagination, but there’s a reason why the mere mention of this enemy’s name strikes fear into the hearts of Dark Souls players.

The Basilisk can inflict the Curse status on a player, forcing them to trudge through a rather arduous series of tasks in order to remove this annoying status effect. But these enemies only appear in one area of the Depths. They also turn up in The Great Hollow and Ash Lake, but these are optional segments that the player can completely avoid, so players can largely breathe easy.

3 Butcher

The Butcher is easily one of the more iconic enemies in Dark Souls, and the fact that this enemy doesn’t respawn after being defeated makes each and every encounter with this foe all the more memorable.

One interesting thing about these enemies is that both Butchers are actually female, a fact easily lost on most players as they’re scrambling to defeat them before getting a bit too closely acquainted with their fearsome tools of the trade.

2 Channeler

The Channeler is easily one of the more irritating yet amusing enemies in the game. While watching this enemy dance around can be somewhat entertaining, the buffs that it confers to your enemies is anything but.

This enemy is rarely present throughout the game, but its appearances can prove to be a major hindrance for the player. The biggest problem comes in the Depths, where leaving the Channeler alive will allow him to buff up the Gaping Dragon during the boss fight. While the Gaping Dragon might not be all that hard a boss, a buff can definitely turn the tide of battle in its favor regardless.

1 Vagrant

The Vagrant is easily the rarest enemy in Dark Souls by a country mile. In fact, the enemy is so rare that most people still have no idea how to spawn these enemies.

Apparently, these enemies spawn in areas where people have died with a ton of humanity or discarded valuables. There are also good and evil forms of these Vagrants as well. The former runs away after spotting the player, while the latter unleashes highly damaging attacks. These Vagrants also come in two colors — white and red — and end up appearing in other worlds if they’re not slain in the player’s world quickly enough.

It’s a mechanic that’s equal parts ingenious and obtuse, to the point where the majority of Dark Souls players have never encountered a single Vagrant during their playthrough.
