Apex Legends Update Adds ‘No Fill’ Option to Let Fans Play Solo

There is an update coming to Apex Legends which will add a “No Fill” option. Respawn Entertainment is putting a feature into Apex Legends that allows for players to queue into a match solo rather than a team.

The free-to-play Battle Royale is one of the most dominant in the industry. Part of the identity in Apex Legends is the format, which sees players joining up in groups of three to claim victory. Since the beginning though, fans have requested a way to play solo to avoid dealing with unhelpful teammates. The upcoming patch looks to finally add in this format, but also with some limitations.

The lobby in Apex Legends will now display a checkbox with a “Fill Matchmaking” title. This is the default option, and will place players in Trios or the permanent Duos mode like originally. To play as a single hero army, fans will just need to uncheck this box before queuing up for a match. This essentially means that from the beginning, a player will be joining a match alone against other teams of three or two. While Respawn asserts that the game is meant for teamplay, this singular format will allow for gamers to come up with creative strategies.

There are also some other reasons a fan might enter a match without a team. According to the post, it can be great for completing weekly challenges or just for warming up. Players will not need to worry about hurting their team and can just get in firefights to practice. This also works well when a new hero is introduced, so fans can learn the ropes. For those wondering, there are some limits to the “No Fill” option. There will only be six solo-queue heroes in a match, and the feature is not available for ranked play.

It is great to see that Respawn is finally adding in the option to play alone. It goes to show that the team is willing to hear out the record breaking Apex community and try suggestions. And like the developer described, it also serves as a decent way for new players to practice. Occasionally, a fan may want to explore the map for lore secrets but that only hurts the team’s objective. By placing some limits, the team assures that Trios and Duos do not descend into single only matches.

Certain players may see this as being the worst of both worlds though. It seems like Respawn might have been better off just creating a Singles mode like the other two. That way, all the players could be alone which would make for a balanced match. Right now, a team of three is most likely going to demolish a singular player. That said, playing the “No Fill” option will likely make for a fun challenge for fans.

Apex Legends is available for free on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and will come to Nintendo Switch on March 9.
