Developer Inti Creates has been working on retro-styled games that scratch a certain itch for many nostalgic gamers. The company’s recent work on Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 was well received by critics, with a solid grasp on old-school action platforming fundamentals. All of this bodes well for the company’s upcoming release Azure Striker Gunvolt 3.
The latest game in the popular indie franchise, Gunvolt 3 is the first mainline entry since 2016, although Inti Creates has developed a few side projects in the Gunvolt universe in the meantime. The company formed as an offshoot of Capcom, and worked on the Mega Man Zero and Mega Man ZX franchises before moving on to Gunvolt. That focus on the action platformer genre has paid off, as Inti Creates games have seemingly perfected the look and feel of the style for many fans.
In a development update, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3‘s “Action Supervisor” Keiji Inafune lets fans know that a new Action Director is being brought in to help with the project. Inafune also announces that the game will be released some time in 2022. The gameplay footage shown in the update appears to be the same as the Gunvolt 3 reveal trailer from last year, though the developer is excited about a new character, Kirin, being introduced in this latest entry in the franchise.
Kirin has a hybrid fighting style that includes the use of a katana, for close encounters. She looks to be a nice complement to Gunvolt, the titular main character. The action platformer genre has been coming back strong with titles like Cyber Shadow, and Inti Creates‘ Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 looks to deliver more of the same for fans, refining what it does well with that cozy, old-school feel.
Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will launch on Nintendo Switch in 2022.
