Blizzard Warns Players About Fake Diablo 2: Resurrected Alphas

Many fans are excited for Blizzard’s upcoming Diablo 2: Resurrected. The remaster of the classic dungeon crawler has many clamoring for access to the playable alphas. However, some fans are falling prey to fraudulent websites.

Blizzard’s Community Development Lead has now warned fans about fake Alphas for Diablo 2: Resurrected. He reminds players they can only sign up for the official alphas on the Diablo 2 website.

Community Development Lead Adam Fletcher warned fans via Twitter on Tuesday. He noted that Blizzard is aware of multiple websites falsely claiming to have digital keys for one or both of Diablo 2: Resurrected‘s technical alphas. Many sites claim to be handing out keys as part of a contest or other giveaway. Blizzard asserts that no such competitions exist.

Fletcher even accuses the Diablo 2: Resurrected subreddit of being part of a scam. According to Fletcher, the subreddit’s Administrator posted false information about one such fraudulent giveaway. The Administrator then permanently banned Fletcher when he informed people of the fraud. Said Admin also edited the post with a confusing rant calling on Blizzard to terminate Fletcher’s contract.

According to Fletcher, the only way to participate in either of Resurrected’s technical alphas is to sign up on diablo2.blizzard.com. Any other website is likely fraudulent. It may also be a good idea to keep away from the subreddit for the time being. A Twitter user reported the subreddit, but it is unclear if or when Reddit administrators will take official action. And as always, people should be careful when giving away personal details and contact information online.

Diablo 2: Resurrection is the upcoming remaster of Blizzard’s classic dungeon crawler. It also includes all content from the game’s Lord of Destruction expansion. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment and Vicarious Visions, Resurrections brings many graphical improvements to the twenty-one-year-old classic. Upgrades include improved effects, animation, and 4K monitor support. The developers also remade all of Diablo 2’s cinematics in HD. Other updates include Dolby 7.1 surround sound and cross-progression between supported platforms. The game will also support PS5 haptic feedback.

Blizzard will release the single-player technical alpha first, hoping that fans might weigh in on balance issues. The studio plans to release the multiplayer alpha later as a stress test of the game’s multiplayer infrastructure. Blizzard hoped releasing the alphas would also keep fans engaged and allow the company to test the waters of public interest.

Given the enthusiastic response to both alphas, it is fair to say many gamers are very excited about Diablo 2: Resurrected. Unfortunately, it’s that same enthusiasm that fraudulent websites are taking advantage of.

Diablo 2: Resurrected releases later this year for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
