Wrestlemania, the aptly-named “Show of Shows,” is undoubtedly WWE‘s biggest event. Since 1985, Wrestlemania has sought to dazzle the audience with a combination of pro wrestling action and celebrity appearances. The show’s history has spanned over three decades with plenty of hits and misses along the way.
The shows that have really stuck out are memorable for a reason. Heavy-hitters such as the Undertaker, Triple H, Steve Austin, and Shawn Michaels have all left their indelible marks on this pay-per-view. Each Wrestlemania is unique in its own special way, but these tend to stand out from the bunch.
10 Wrestlemania XXVIII (7.8)
There was a tremendous amount of hype going into Wrestlemania XXVIII. In fact, the tagline of the show was given the grandiose title of “Once in a Lifetime.” The excitement stemmed from the fact that John Cena and The Rock would face each other for the first time in a match.
The Rock hadn’t been a regular fixture for the company in eight years. The feud between the two had been hyped for an entire year in advance. The result was an above-average performance that, nevertheless, failed to live up to the massive expectations. The pair would later hold a rematch at Wrestlemania 29. So much for “Once in a Lifetime.”
9 Wrestlemania XIV (7.9)
In 1998, Wrestlemania XIV captured national headlines. One of America’s most famous athletes at the time, “Iron” Mike Tyson, had agreed to make an appearance. The boxing legend served as the special guest enforcer for the main event match between Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin.
The deck was stacked against Steve Austin. Tyson had pledged his support to Shawn Michaels’ D-Generation X faction after an altercation with Austin. However, in an exciting twist, Mike Tyson betrayed Michaels and awarded the title to Stone Cold. It would mark the official start of the vaunted Attitude Era.
8 Wrestlemania X8 (7.9)
Wrestlemania X8 consisted of a couple of high-profile matches. The two main feuds going into the event revolved around the nWo angle and the rivalry between Triple H and Chris Jericho. Stone Cold would defeat Scott Hall and Triple H would become the new WWE Undisputed Champion.
Perhaps the most memorable match of the night, however, was the “Icon vs. Icon” showdown between Hulk Hogan and The Rock. The pair fought a decent match and would witness Hollywood Hulk Hogan’s transition from a heel to a face.
7 Wrestlemania X (8.0)
Wrestlemania X had some pretty dynamite match-ups on the card. The show started off with a bang with a match between the Hart brothers, Bret and Owen. Randy Savage wrestled his last match for the WWE by defeating Crush. The main event witnessed a classic confrontation between Yokozuna and Bret Hart, who captured the WWE Championship.
However, the match that truly stole the show was between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon for the Intercontinental Championship. It proved to be an immensely entertaining Ladder match that fans still talk about today. The performance ranks as one of the greatest showdowns in WWE history.
6 Wrestlemania XXX (8.0)
Wrestlemania XXX was yet another history-making event for the company. Daniel Bryan, riding a massive wave of popular support, competed twice in one night. It culminated in Bryan’s victory in the main event where he won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
The huge shocker of the evening, however, came with the match between the Undertaker and Brock Lesnar. In a controversial move with fans, the Undertaker’s 21-0 undefeated streak at Wrestlemania came to an end. It was a streak that had been kept intact since 1991.
5 Wrestlemania III (8.1)
For older fans, thinking of Wrestlemania often conjures up images of the third entry. Held at the Pontiac Silverdome the event shattered the company’s attendance record, an achievement that wouldn’t be surpassed for decades. The mid-card was notable for the excellent match-up between Ricky Steamboat and Randy Savage for the Intercontinental title.
The most iconic moment of the night occurred in the main event. Hulk Hogan, WWE’s greatest babyface of the 1980s, retained the World Heavyweight Championship. The image of Hogan body slamming Andre the Giant has endured in the minds of fans to this very day.
4 Wrestlemania 31 (8.1)
Wrestlemania 31 had been one of the more successful pay-per-view events in recent memory. The match between Triple H and Sting was particularly well-received by reigniting the old WCW vs. WWE rivalry of the 1990s. An entertaining 7-man Ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship was also held in which Daniel Bryan emerged victorious.
The highlight of the night was, of course, the main event. The defending champion, Brock Lesnar, had a solid match with Roman Reigns. It ended with Seth Rollins cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase to win the WWE World Heavyweight title in a stunning shocker.
3 Wrestlemania XX (8.1)
This particular Wrestlemania is mostly known for its stellar main event, with some of the mid-card being a mixed bag. Victoria and Molly Holly battled in a Title vs. Hair match for the Women’s Championship. The Rock n’ Sock Connection (The Rock & Mankind) memorably reunited to take on Evolution (Batista, Randy Orton & Ric Flair).
The main event was a Triple Threat match for the World Heavyweight title. In a contest lasting nearly thirty minutes, Chris Benoit defeated Shawn Michaels and Triple H. For Benoit, it was unquestionably the high point of his long career. The image of him celebrating with his best friend Eddie Guerrero has become iconic.
2 Wrestlemania XIX (8.3)
In the midst of the Ruthless Aggression Era, Wrestlemania XIX was assuredly an action-packed affair. New and established stars alike battled it out in a series of very impressive matches. Highlights included Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho, Triple H vs. Booker T, and Stone Cold vs. The Rock.
The final match of the evening would be held between Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle for the WWE Championship. Lesnar defeated Angle and captured the title for the second time in his career. The match itself is definitely worth the time to watch as it’s a bit underrated.
1 Wrestlemania X-7 (9.1)
Wrestlemania X-7 is often quoted by fans and critics alike as the greatest entry of all time. A core of critically-acclaimed matches would be witnessed at this event. In particular, the TLC match consisting of the Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz, and Edge & Christian is arguably one of the most superb matches in WWE history.
The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin were the main attractions. They delivered yet another classic match that is still talked about today. It’s memorable for Steve Austin’s heel turn and his joining forces with Mr. McMahon. The two had been hated enemies for so long that the sudden turn of events was truly shocking for fans to witness.
