At the recent special launch event, the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT was revealed as the fourth graphics card in AMD’s RDNA 2 lineup. Boasting 12 GB VRAM and targeted at 1440p gaming, the RX 6700 XT should be a solid midrange option that can compete with Nvidia’s RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070.
Despite the fact that the GPU market is a mess right now, AMD has stated that they’re doing everything they can to ensure there’s more stock on their website as well as board partners and manufacturers. Unfortunately, AMD doesn’t have any plans to limit the crypto mining efficiency of the card like Nvidia did with the RTX 3060, so only time will tell if the RX 6700 XT will be readily available.
As revealed in the launch event, the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT will be released online and in stores on March 18, 2021. Although the GPU market is extremely volatile right now, AMD has stated that they plan to have significantly more cards available at launch to meet demand. Furthermore, AMD will have a simultaneous release with third party partners like XFX and MSI in order to try to get more cards into the hands of actual gamers. However, based on the current trends in the GPU marketplace, the demand is still heavily outpacing stock while miners and scalpers drive the price up. On March 18, Radeon RX 6700 XT cards should be available from AMD.com, the usual board partners, OEMs and system builders. Furthermore, the HP Omen 25L and 30L desktops will also feature the RX 6700 XT and they should be released sometime this spring.
The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is a graphics card targeted at 1440p gaming which means that while it won’t need the 16GB of VRAM that the other cards in the RX 6000 series have, it’ll still include 12GB of VRAM to future-proof the card. Importantly, AMD has also provided some initial benchmarks of the card with both AMD and Nvidia favored games. It appears that AMD can compete with the Nvidia RTX 3070 but more benchmarks will be required for a definitive answer.
Clocked faster than the other RX 6000 cards at 2424 MHz, the RX 6700 XT should be a decent upgrade for most setups, especially for PCs that haven’t updated their GPUs in a few years. Furthermore, the RX 6700 XT will offer ray-tracing capabilities despite behind slightly behind Nvidia in terms of performance. Based on the previous RX 6000 cards, the RX 6700 XT will likely only handle ray tracing at 1080p/60 FPS until AMD has something similar to Nvidia’s DLSS.
The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT will start at $479 USD while third party versions will likely go up in price due to better cooling and power options. This price point seems to land squarely between the $399 Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti and $499 Nvidia RTX 3070 as well as coming in at $100 less than its RX 6800 counterpart. As the RX 6700 XT is a competitor to the RTX 3070, this is a budget-friendly option for builds looking to game in 1440p. The AMD reference card seems to come with dual-fan cooling while the third party options seem to favor triple-fan cooling so this will likely account for the price differences.
Unfortunately, whether the price point for the RX 6700 XT will stay stable remains to be seen. Given that there’s currently a shortage of GPUs available on the market, many of the newest cards are reselling for hundreds more than their MSRP. The Radeon RX 6700 XT is definitely a solid choice for any midrange build but the resale prices may not be worth the upgrade or hassle.
The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT will be available March 18.
