Captain Jack Sparrow has been a fan-favorite character of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise since the release of the first movie. The success of this character is huge, as a result of Johnny Depp’s genius in portraying the ambitious pirate captain.
Over the course of the movies, Captain Jack Sparrow said many things, some of which were outright hilarious while some actually made sense. A lot of times, it’s difficult to figure out the meaning behind what Captain Sparrow says, and if one should take it seriously, but that just gives him a certain mysterious vibe that makes him all the more likable.
10 “The World’s Still The Same, There’s Just Less In It.”
After Jack had been rescued from Davy Jones’ locker, there was the issue of getting back to where they came from. After a hilarious scuffle on the ship, they decided to stop on an island to get some supplies. Here, they found the dead Kraken washed up ashore. As Jack and Barbossa talked about summoning the brethren court, Barbossa said, “The world used to be a bigger place.” Jack retorted, “The world’s still the same, there’s just less in it.” This is one of a few of Jack’s quotes that don’t have a funny hindsight, but actually shows a more sensitive side to the character.
9 “Better To Not Know Which Moment May Be Your Last.”
In Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, after a thrilling battle over the possession of the chalices and The Fountain Of Youth, Blackbeard was defeated. At the same time, Mr. Gibbs was retrieving The Black Pearl which was trapped in a bottle on board the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard’s ship. Gibbs met up with Jack and handed him the Pearl. When asked by Gibbs why he didn’t drink from the fountain, Jack replied that it was better to not know which moment may be your last in life.
8 “Not All Treasure Is Silver And Gold, Mate.”
Jack and Will had successfully arrived at Isla De Muerta and were attempting to save Elizabeth who had been taken captive by Barbossa and his crewmen. As they rowed in the waters that ran through the caves of the island, they discussed Will’s actions and their similarities to a Pirate’s life.
Jack stated that Will was completely obsessed with treasure. When Will denied this, Jack said to him, “Not all treasure is silver and gold mate.” Jack was right, after all, Will was obsessed with Elizabeth.
7 “It’s Remarkable How Often Those Two Traits Coincide.”
Will sprung Jack from his cell at Port Royale and they began making their way to find The Black Pearl and rescue Elizabeth. Before that, however, they had to commandeer a ship from the Port. They took a small boat and pulled it under the water upside down to create an air pocket for them to breathe. While they were under the water, Will considered what they were doing and said that it was either brilliance or madness. Jack told Will, “It’s remarkable how often those two traits coincide.” This makes sense, as Jack is often referred to as a mad man.
6 “If We Don’t Have The Key, We Can’t Open Whatever It Is That We Don’t Have That It Unlocks.”
Although the words are all over the place with the quote, “If we don’t have the key, we can’t open whatever it is we don’t have that it unlocks,” it does make sense when one takes the time to consider it. Jack had snuck into a castle to acquire the drawing of a key. His crewmen were upset that he came back with something they considered to be useless. After explaining himself to them, Gibbs suggested that they were going after what the key unlocks. Jack pointed out, that they first needed to find the key before finding whatever it was that they key unlocks.
5 “You Seem Somewhat Familiar, Have I Threatened You Before?”
When Jack first met William Turner, the pirate was on the run from the authorities. Jack hid in Will’s blacksmith shop and broke free from his shackles. When Will returned, he was confronted by Jack, and just before the two began crossing blades, Jack stated that he seemed familiar and asked if he’d threatened him before.
The events that followed this incident gave meaning to the statement, because Jack later stated that Will looked just like his father. That’s probably why Jack wondered if he’d met him before.
4 “I Love Those Moments. I Like To Wave At Them As They Pass By.”
Jack and Elizabeth were sailing for Isla Cruces and while they talked, the topic came up about doing the right thing. Elizabeth told Jack that the moment is coming when he’ll have the chance to do the right thing. Jack said that he loved those moments and that he likes to wave at them as they passed by. This was quite hilarious considering the fact that he contradicted this statement towards the end of the movie.
3 “She’s Only A Ship, Mate.”
When Jack and his crew were attacked by Davy Jones, Jack managed to outrun the Flying Dutchman, thanks to his beloved Black Pearl. Though they escaped the Flying Dutchman, they weren’t out of the woods yet. Davy Jones sent the Kraken after them, and the crew onboard the Black Pearl found themselves desperately trying to survive.
Thanks to Will’s quick thinking, they managed to fight back, but all they did was anger the Kraken. When asked what to do, Jack ordered everyone to abandon the ship. Gibbs was shocked that Jack would abandon the Black Pearl and tried to convince him otherwise. Jack simply replied, “She’s only a ship, mate,” suggesting that their lives were more important.
2 “We Must Fight To Run Away.”
During the gathering of the Brethren Court, there was disagreement amongst the members as to what to do regarding their impending battle against the Royal Navy. Different people voiced their opinions about fighting or running away. Jack sparrow spoke up and after a speech that took into account everybody’s suggestions, he concluded by saying, “We must fight, to run away.” This resulted in an election to decide the Pirate King, and after Elizabeth’s victory, courtesy of Jack Sparrow, they proceeded to fight the Armada. Moments like these make one wish this movie had a video game.
1 “A Dishonest Man You Can Always Trust To Be Dishonest.”
Jack was able to convince Barbossa to separate from his men, and while Barbossa’s men attacked the Royal Navy, Jack and Will fought Barbossa and the remnant of his men. Before the fight, however, just before Jack double-crossed Barbossa, the old pirate admitted that Jack was a difficult man to predict. Jack replied that he was dishonest, explaining that a dishonest man could always be trusted to be dishonest. This particular speech has been the subject of several memes. After this exchange a fight broke out, the curse was lifted and Barbossa was killed.
