Counter-Strike: Global Offensive features a variety of maps depicting everything from dusty desert streets to Venetian canals and the sterile corridors of a nuclear powerplant. Odds are everyone can find at least one Counter-Strike map they love. For one mod maker, that map is Nuke, and it seems there is no such thing as too many reactors and cooling towers.
Map modder Henge shows the world how three Counter-Strike: Global Offensive maps look reskinned in the style of the Nuke map. All three are available in the Steam Workshop.
YouTuber and CS: GO enthusiast 3kliksphilip explored them in a video on Thursday. The three maps are alternate versions of the Cache, Office, and Mirage maps, dubbed Nache, Noffice, and Nirage. As the video points out, Henge preserved the original map’s layout almost exactly. There are a few changes, such as rearranged props, different cover positions, different sized doors, and a few extra ladders. Still, Counter-Strike fans should have no difficulty recognizing the layout.
The maps’ quality is part of what makes them stand out. Henge is no novice when it comes to map-making in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and that experience really shows. He created the mods using the Source Map Maker. Notably, Henge elected not to use Source’s bulk texture tools. Instead, he placed assets manually to achieve the desired effect, and his hard work paid off. The new maps could easily be mistaken for parts of the existing Nuke map while still retaining many distinguishing features.
But why Nuke in particular? Nuke while not universally beloved, is an old classic with versions dating all the way back to the original Half-Life mod from 2000. Nuke’s assets are also very versatile and look good in both tight corridors and open exteriors. Henge also notes that he finds the clean look appealing and the Nuke assets easy to work with.
Of course, Henge mentions that the maps he based his on have certain hard-coded limitations. Some grenades don’t work on the Nirage map, for example, because they didn’t work on the original. However, that does not mean his custom maps aren’t worth giving a try.
Other Henge map mods for Counter-Strike: GO include another Mirage reskin and an upgraded version of Aztec. The former is called Mirust and replaces Mirage’s Moroccan architecture with Dust 2’s iconic Arabian assets. Meanwhile, his Aztec reskin adds a bit more color to the Central American dig site thanks to assets from the Ancient map added in the December 2020 Broken Fang update.
