Suffice it to say the recent Sony event was met with mixed reception. There were no bombshells revealed on the scale of what many hoped would be included like more information on the new God of War, or Horizon Forbidden West. There was one showstopper though in the form of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Not only is the game coming to PS5, but there is a new episode starring Yuffie in the works as well. Further more, after that show wrapped up Square Enix unveiled two more games set in the Final Fantasy VII universe. Let’s figure out what this all means for the future of the franchise and what exactly these games are.
Among the announcements, the PS5 upgrade is the least exciting. It will launch on the system on June 10, which is not that far away at all. It will be the now standard of $70, or fans that already own it on PS4 can upgrade into it for free although there is a caveat. This upgrade route will not include the Yuffie episode.
Said episode will also only be available to PS5 players as whatever Square Enix did to it was only made possible thanks to that system. It’s a full on sequel but that is exciting. How much the episode will cost has not been exposed yet but one can bet it will probably be at least $30. That’s how much the DLC expansion was for Kingdom Hearts III and that was barely anything compared to what this seems to be.
As for the upgrades, this version is boasting better lighting and textures. It will run at either sixty frames per second, or be visually capable of running in 4K. It depends on the mode one puts the game into. The trailer showed off how fast the load times will be as well as say it will utilize the PS5 controller’s haptic feedback. Finally, there will be new difficulties and a Photo Mode, the latter of which is something fans have been wanting since it launched last year.
More interesting than the price of Yuffie’s episode is what it is about. Based on the footage shown, her entering Midgar seems to take place around Cloud falling from Reactor Five when he meets up with Aerith right after. She will be joined in her adventure by newcomer to the series, Sonon Kusakabe. He will accompany Yuffie in combat but like Red XIII he will not be playable.
How far her story goes is anyone’s guess though is there is a lot to unpack here. The biggest reason why is the end of the trailer when Yuffie and Sonon are being surrounded by what look like Deepground soldiers. That may be a bit of an obscure reference that needs explaining. Deepground was the secret organization that formed under Shinra.
They were in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, which was the Vincent shooter spinoff on PS2 in 2006. That game takes place three years after the original game, and a year after the film. Alongside Deepground were the Tsviets which were the elite soldiers run by the man flashed at the end of the Yuffie trailer. His name is Weiss. This is odd to see so early in the Final Fantasy VII universe, meaning a whole mess of things could happen from here out of order.
This game is a battle royal type experience aimed at iOS and Android devices. It’s expected to release this year and will take place thirty years before the events of Final Fantasy VII. The trailer even shows what appears to be a young President Shinra witnessing the chaos of battle.
Prior to this, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the 2007 PSP spinoff starring Zack, was the oldest game in the timeline. That took place seven years before the original game. Not much is known other than the premise of determining who the first SOLDIER will be or how the game will work but one can bet Sephiroth and a cavalcade of other Final Fantasy VII will be in it in some capacity.
This is another mobile spinoff although it is not due until 2022. At first the trailer made it look like a demake of Final Fantasy VII Remake which is actually similar to what Square Enix did with Final Fantasy XV. They released Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition on iOS devices in 2018. The first chapter was free and the episodes were individually sold at $1 apiece or through a complete $20 bundle.
It went through the basics of the proper game while keeping the action combat somewhat and was a bit cuter. That may have been enough to get fans excited for this game if it too followed the same procedure. However, it was also spelled out in the trailer that every game in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII would get remade, or demade really, through Ever Crisis. It will all also be turn-based.
This includes the movie, Advent Children, which never received a game before. Also interesting in that pack is Before Crisis, a game taking place six years before the original game did which was about the Turks. It never left Japan. Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus were also mentioned and the trailer even ended with a tease of the beginning of Crisis Core.
There are two big questions to this news. Will it come to consoles and how much will it be? That Final Fantasy XV spinoff was $20 altogether so one can bet each individual game will at least that meaning Ever Crisis could be a $100 game. As for consoles, that spinoff came also came out the same year with an HD version. This game will probably hit consoles eventually too.
