Red Dead Redemption’s signature cover art featuring the classic character John Marston has gotten a remake. A fan utilized the photo mode feature in the prequel game to recreate the famous cover from Red Dead Redemption.
The prequel follows the events that led to John having to hunt down his former gang. Red Dead Redemption 2’s story heavy narrative was lauded by critics during the original release, and takes place in a detailed western world. Despite releasing 8 years later, the prequel also included much of the map and many of the locations from the first game. The photo mode Rockstar put in helps fans appreciate the landscapes and characters through picturesque snapshots.
Now, Reddit poster snushyslushy has put forth their knowledge of the series using the photo feature. The original cover for the title showcased a grizzled, hatless version of John Marston pointing a double-barreled shotgun at the viewer. Set on a blood-red desert landscape with the faded stars of the American flag in the distance. By the end of Red Dead Redemption 2, players take control of the original game’s protagonist and can snap photos.
User snushyslushy’s recreation is not perfect, but it captures most of the main elements from the original cover. In the photo, the photographer has John Marston pointing the shotgun towards the viewer, and without his typical cowboy hat. Though, between the two the hairstyle seems to be a bit different with the original cover having a longer look. Hair grows naturally in Red Dead Redemption 2, so nailing the length is not the easiest. The new photo still has John on the desert background complete with cactus and underbrush, but it also is more of an orange tint than the deep red of the original.
The fact that players are taking photos in Red Dead Redemption 2 during quarantine is a testament to the game’s longevity. Between the main game and Red Dead Online, fans have made use of the feature. While the online mode is not as popular as single-player, it still provides a way to enjoy the world. No doubt that with the release of next-generation consoles, gamers will continue to use the photo feature.
On the other hand, the focus on taking pictures could be a sign of lacking content. Even with the incredibly popular release, fans have been petitioning for Red Dead Redemption 2 story DLC. The multiplayer gets updates occasionally but far less than Rockstar’s GTA Online. Taking photos of John Marston could be the most exciting thing for fans to do 3 years after launch. That said, snushyslushy’s version is faithful to the legacy of the series and worth checking out.
